About the Author
Trixie von Purl was born Patricia Purlton and came to fame in the 1960s when she had to flee to India after a scandal involving a fling with a famously full-lipped rock musician of the time (hint: he wasn't in The Beatles). It was in India that she became fascinated with the Kama Sutra, and for a brief time changed her name to "Indrani," believing herself to be the incarnation of the Queen of Heaven. Trixie eventually moved to California and turned her attention to the burlesque scene, teaching today's well-known burlesque stars everything they know. This is when her love of knitting got the better of her, and she started to combine the craft with her once-favorite subject. Trixie now lives in Paris and can often be found entertaining knitting salons with stories about her colorful past.

Funny, mildly sexy; great resource for making 11" knitted dolls and wardrobes.

This is the most charming knitted doll book I own. You won't want to leave it around for your grandchildren to peek at, but honestly the sex part is quite mild. There are naked dolls to knit , which don't have nipples or pubic hair, and the male doll crotches are suggestive rather than explicit. However, patterns for two naked dolls wouldn't make a book. The author has therefore considered the various scenarios seen in erotica, and has provided patterns for all the clothes and sets that support those scenarios. There is a knitted bearskin rug, knitted peignoirs, a knitted honeymoon suite, a knitted tent, a knitted photocopier ... you get the idea. Each scenario has one picture of two naked knitted dolls going at it, but you probably did more explicit things with your Barbie dolls. (Maybe that was just me.)
The dolls are done in stockinette with fingering yarn on double-pointed U.S. size 2 needles; there's some short-row shaping. Some of the clothes and accessories are more advanced, including dresses in simple lace patterns (laceweight yarn); a photocopier in seed stitch and intarsia knitting; a wonderful pin-striped suit with the rows running vertically; and a chicken with slip-stitch patterned wings. (Don't worry, the chicken is a prop and is not actually involved in the sex. No chickens were harmed in the making of this book. A moose, however, appears only from the neck up and mounted on the wall.)
If you're the sort of person who is comfortable reading the original Kama Sutra, this book will seem (at most) mildly saucy to you. If you are uncomfortable reading one-page descriptions of sexual positions illustrated by knitted dolls, you'll hate this book. And if you want to make 11 1/2" dolls plus wardrobes, seriously consider buying this.

Not a one trick pony! This book has much to offer.

Really clever and fun knitting projects. As a beginner knitter, this is beyond my skill level however it is a great course in sculptural knitting, clothing construction, doll making, and knitting with tiny double pointed needles. The knitting skills used for the projects in this book have many applications beyond the content of the book. With the help from technical how to books, I am knitting my way through Knit Your Own Kama Sutra.
