About the Author
John Hennessy is a young adult / new adult novelist whose preferred writing genre is horror, and has authored the Dark Winter series as well as the fantasy epic Stormling. A huge fan of the paranormal, he will actively visit reported ghost haunts and it could be said that they served as inspiration for his debut fiction novel; Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle. Inbetween writing Book Two of the series, Dark Winter: Crescent Moon, he released the fantasy epic Stormling, which is the first book of the Mordana Chronicles. New for 2014:- Stormling (fantasy) Dark Winter: Crescent Moon (paranormal horror - YA to Adult) Murderous Little Darlings (vampire horror / dark comedy series) The first short story he ever wrote brought together Fagan, Lizzie Bennett, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, which despite impressing his long suffering English teacher, thankfully remains unpublished. For recreation he will visit paranormal hotspots, but prefers to write about ghosts rather than meet them. He also believes almost any problem can be overcome so long as there is an inexhaustible supply of tea and biscuits. He also has an obsession with Batman and anything Gotham. In 2015, the short novella horror The Blood and the Raven: A Tale of Vampires, Book Two, the final Dark Winter story will be released, as will a new suspense / horror thriller entitled Clara's Song. In his own words: "I write because I love to write, create something from nothing. If people love that too, be the few or many, I am delighted to know this, each and every time. I love to connect and hear from fellow authors, readers, anyone who loves books. A writer can never feel lonely if he has this most unique of support groups!

Very peculiar and catchy
By Joselyn Raquel MB
I received this book from the author for an honest review
The first sentence brilliant and fun.
The story will get to you real quick and it was a little tangled but explains a lot and you have a more wide view on the characters and the plot of Juliana.
I loved the scene with the raven it was funny and the mood is a little twisted but I love this kind of vampires ruthless and mean that's what how vampires should be.
all in all I really liked it and i'm anxious to keep reading more in this series.

An awesome stand-alone vampire story.
By Kaylah
I think if I had read this as a stand-alone, I wouldn't have questioned it as much as I did, having read the first in the series.
The book is a story within a story. Five teenagers are sitting around, each holding a candle. (I assume they're in the woods, although I'm unsure if this is ever made clear or not.) They've all had their turn telling scary stories, now it's Seth's turn. But he's reluctant to share it.
He eventually tells the tale of a woman and her husband and they're odd experience with "The Blood and the Raven Inn".
The back story was interesting, the details were well done, and as I said, as a standalone it works really well.
However, having read the first in the series, it confused me. Seth's story places Juliana as an eighteen year old vampire (though clearly mentally older than her physical age) back in the day of horse drawn carriages. But in the preceding book, Juliana is an eleven year old triplet with two brothers who they briefly mention in The Blood and the Raven. Book one, I'm under the impression, is set in modern day.
And from my understanding, her brothers were human. Perhaps she turned them after the first story finished (which was hinted at). But that still doesn't explain why she has brothers back in the olden days if they were human in the modern day story. (Maybe I missed the point of first book?)
Perhaps the fact that Seth is telling the story, maybe some truths have been blurred and the era of which it was set was exaggerated for dramatic effect.
Maybe these things will be answered in future books. Maybe I'm reading into things and not seeing the story for what it was, which is an entertaining vampire story. I did enjoy the book, I may have even loved it.
John Hennessy is the kind of author who likes to throw in twists that leaves more questions than answers, then leaves you hanging for what comes next.

I enjoyed being perturbed and scared!
By James Duncan
As someone not overly familiar with the vampire genre, apart from a few movies, I have to say that this was a highly impressive, intriguing, not to say eerie introduction to the world of vampires. John Hennessy is something of an authority on the true essence of vampires and points out that this story is strictly in the tradition of vampires as cold-blooded killers, as depicted by Bram Stoker's Dracula, rejecting later misrepresentations of vampires as seductive romancers.
For those who love their horror starkly terrifying and dark, you won't find a better exponent of this art of story telling than Mr Hennessy.
It begins with a group of teenagers attempting to scare the living daylights out of one another in the creepy setting of a priory. They are failing miserably until it's Seth turn and two candles are ominously extinguished as he begins his forbidding tale...
A peevish man and his young wife are travelling through the Midlands by horse and carriage in torrential rain. They take respite in an inn called the Blood and the Raven. A savage raven does indeed reside there. The couple find the beautiful landlady, Mariana and her daughter Juliana most alluring and welcoming, however, the locals are strange and sniggering, making disturbing comments about blood and the raven. Then the landlady offers them separate rooms due to some strange custom. The man is angry and he and his wife leave. They are however forced back to the inn by the broken road. Upon entering, some really blood chilling events occur. There is more to Mariana and her daughter than meets the eye...it's truly disturbing.
What is so amazing about Hennessy's writing is that he manages to draw you completely into the world he has created. He creates a dismal, horrifying, claustrophobic world with atmospheric writing that conveys a terror and evil that reign supreme. I was also surprised by some of the twists and turns - testament to highly skilful writing, why should I be surprised when I should guess what is coming in a vampire tale entitled The Blood and the Raven?
I was perturbed by this story and scared and the part of me that enjoys being perturbed and scared very much enjoyed this clever tale.
