About the Author
Walter M. Miller, Jr. grew up in the American South and enlisted in the Army Air Corps a month after Pearl Harbor. He spent most of World War II as a radio operator and tail gunner, participating in more than fifty-five combat sorties, among them the controversial destruction of the Benedictine abbey at Monte Cassino, the oldest monastery in the Western world. Fifteen years later he wrote A Canticle for Leibowitz. The sequel, Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, followed after nearly forty years.

Nothing Is As It Seems

Check and Checkmate is a cold war inspired sci-fi short story, told from the perspective of the West where in the name of security, all and everyone is under suspicion, especially of being an instrument or agent of the East. The two superpowers have had no interaction for years. Leaders operate from behind masks and use multiple similarly clad doubles to shield their identities from their own people, whom they fear, as well as from discovery by the other superpower, whom they also fear. Then the leader of the West unexpectedly contacts his counterpart from the East to initiate disarmament talks, while also distrusting his counterpart, and a diplomatic dance ensues. It seems nothing is as it seems. The story drags a bit in parts, but the ending is unexpected and a bit troubling.

The book moves along slowly, with an underlying promise of a great- at least good- ending, which the plot does not deliver. If you like sci fi lit, then read Walter Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz, if you want a true feel for Miller's literary capabilities.
