The galaxy is on the brink of war, and only four dysfunctional, hormone-driven teenagers from Earth stand in its way. God help us all.
It didn't take Cooper long to come to the conclusion that space sucks. It seems everyone there despises humans, everything's too far away, and the travel makes you heave. Worse still, Cooper's stuck there with his best mate, The Ginge, who can't tell where games end and reality begins, and two other former classmates who want to beat the crap out of him.
Oh yeah, and people...well, alien people are trying to kill them. Space does have some good points. The boys can have anything they wish for; all they have to do is ask for it...or think it.
Plus they are now somehow Earth's leaders--as in more important than the president of the United States of America. If Cooper can only stop the other boys from gorging on their every desire, chasing the most human-looking alien women and fighting each other, he might convince everyone that humans aren't the galactic equivalent of white trash. But things are about to get a whole lot worse.
War looms, and Cooper and his inept sidekicks are caught in the middle. They, the Earth, and the galaxy will never be the same again.

I'm a rather immature mid 30's guy with kids who happens to love sci-fi and more broadly escapist reading
By Nova Sensei
Hmmm where to start? At the beginning I suppose! This one grabbed me right from the opening paragraph, due in large part I think to the number of pop-culture references it hit me with. There's something extremely satisfying about "getting it" and I think with Kings of the World I really was. To clarify, I'm not a teen reader. I'm a rather immature mid 30's guy with kids who happens to love sci-fi and more broadly escapist reading. There's nothing I look for more in a non-fiction novel (or movie/game for that matter) than its ability to transform me to a different universe. Kings of the World ticks that box. Then blasts it away with a well-placed laser shot.
The core characters are well introduced and pay perfect homage to some of the classic teen movies and TV shows of the past three decades whilst managing to avoid the trappings of modern clichés. The pacing is great. In the immortal word of Ron Burgandy "boy, that escalated quickly". I wouldn't be surprised if some readers were finishing this one in a matter of days. There's never a dull moment and the various predicaments of the core characters keep you turning the page to find out what happens next.
I don't want to turn this into an 8th grade book report (mainly for fear that some snooty 8th grader will copy and paste it into their own book report thinking it will get them a passing grade) so I'll wrap it up by saying this is a wonderful novel for the demographic at which it is aimed (early teens boys in my humble opinion). But more than that, it's a great read for anyone who loves sci-fi comedy (think Red Dwarf, Futurama etc) or just a bit of general humour and escapism. And that's not to down play things - there are some real messages in here about friendship, family, and sacrifice that I think will really resonate with the target audience.
It's 5 stars from me - but only on the condition that it gets a sequel!

talking about music and other teenager like activities. Saving a planet is not number one ...
By AudioBook Reviewer
Kings of the World is an interesting teen-focused book, purely of the sci-fi genre. It is a satire in which teenagers are resolving their own issues with each other, playing games, talking about music and other teenager like activities. Saving a planet is not number one on their list of to do’s.
The story starts out with four teenagers on Earth living their usual life, leading to an incident where they are offered to join the galactic council to represent Earth. Accepting their new role on the galactic council, they are living a rich life, in space where they can have whatever they ask for absolutely free, they tend to get greedy and are more into playing games rather than representing planet Earth. Of the four of them, Cooper realizes their importance when he learns more about the inter-galactic politics. The fate of the world is left in the hands of four teenagers!
The author’s writing is clear considering he had to introduce so many aliens plus it isn’t easy to paint a picture of the galaxy, tele-porter or the translator who fulfills your every request. Matt Pike, the author used vivid details to make the descriptions clear.
Although it is interesting typical teenage stuff, great references to music and sarcastic comments, the narration by Justin Braine is not as great. His narration becomes irritating, the voice gets steep. This was the case with all his voices as well so that by the end you tend to lose focus. Also all the action of the story lies within the very end of the book. The production had some issues as well as the narrator’s voice became muffled in some places.

Original and Captivating

Kings of the World is Matt Pike’s first novel, though it’s the second book I have read of his (see my review of Apocalypse: Diary of a Sruvivor, where I decided I must read every book he ever writes).
Kings of the World is about four teenage boys—Cooper, The Ginge, Knuckles, and Pete—who are chosen to represent Earth on the Galactic Council, a committee comprising of members from all civilized worlds throughout the universe. Every so often, the council meets on Galactica, where the council originated. Sessions can last for weeks or for decades, during which time all members get to know each other and vote on important decisions that affect their planets. They also party hard.
Although the boys start off as enemies, they learn to appreciate each other’s strengths and come to form a team. Life on Galactica is hard initially, between getting used to new customs, learning how to make Earth look good to other planets, and of course, dealing with the occasional attacks on the councilors. Earth’s initiation into the Galactic Council coincides with 37 other new intake species—a record high. The attacks seem more than coincidental, and Cooper decides he will spend his time trying to figure out who is behind them.
But life is not always so serious. The boys quickly learn how to use the Universal Translator, which, in addition to translating universal languages, can be used to create anything the boys desire: food, entertainment, and more. With their new tool they are able to build their own realistic war games and become popular among the other new intake groups.
Like in Apocalypse, Matt incorporates a lot of gaming into the story, though it’s on a completely different level in Kings of the World. Though I’m not a big gamer, it’s entertaining to read about all the innovations and ways to take gaming to the next level in a world where there are no boundaries.
Matt also deftly inserts humor in the strange circumstances the boys often find themselves in. Cooper, The Ginge, Knuckles, and Pete all have traits that are very relatable. They each have distinct personalities, and though they struggle at times, they each come into their own by the end of the story. They do grow up and learn to become leaders, but at the same time they manage to retain their youth.
The story ends with an epic battle, one that is both political and physical. They antagonists of the book have shades of grey, and Matt reveals the complexities and moral dilemmas of alien politics, which though they claim to be superior and wiser, closely resemble politics on Earth.
Matt has created a fascinating world full of characters with different motivations and personalities. The very end of Kings of the World is a nice setup for a sequel, which Matt has promised in his Q & A session in the back of the book will come out soon. So now, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the sequel’s release.
