Time and the Gods

Lord Dunsany

Time and the Gods is the second book by Irish fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, considered a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula K. Le Guin and others.

The book was first published in hardcover by William Heinemann in September, 1906, and has been reprinted a number of times since. It was issued by the Modern Library in an unauthorised combined edition with The Book of Wonder under the latter's title in 1918.

Dunsany had a brief preface in the original edition and added a new introduction to the 1922 edition.

The book is a series of short stories linked by Dunsany's invented pantheon of deities who dwell in Pegana. It was preceded by his earlier collection The Gods of Pegana and followed by some stories in The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories.

The book was illustrated by Dunsany's preferred artist Sidney Sime, who provided a range of black and white plates, the originals of which are still at Dunsany Castle. These were present in the 1906 and 1922 editions, not in the unauthorised collections and not in most modern reproductions.

The title is thought to have been influenced by Algernon Swinburne, who wrote the line "Time and the Gods are at strife" in his 1866 poem “Hymn to Proserpine.”

More tales of the gods of Pegana.
By Michele L. Worley
As I write this, TIME AND THE GODS is in print as part of the Fantasy Masterworks series; that edition also includes THE SWORD OF WELLERAN, A DREAMER'S TALES, THE BOOK OF WONDER, THE LAST BOOK OF WONDER, and THE GODS OF PEGANA. TIME AND THE GODS itself is a collection of 20 short stories, from the same mythology as those in THE GODS OF PEGANA.

In case you're not familiar with the Pegana pantheon, MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI, the creator, is supreme. He created lots of small gods, then lay down to rest. While he slept, they created worlds other than Pegana itself to pass the time. Nobody in this mythology worships MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI directly, for fear of waking him up and thus ending everything. His priests' task is to sit around and do nothing. :) The stories therefore deal with all the small gods (who can be rather petty, being small gods).

"The Cave of Kai" - How Khanazar the Lone found a way to do battle with Kai, who guards the past against gods and men.

"The Coming of the Sea" - Introducing Slid, seen also in THE GODS OF PEGANA.

"The Dreams of a Prophet" - A tale of how the gods are punished for their cruelty (Dunsany rather likes that theme; Pegana's gods certainly aren't morally superior beings).

"For the Honour of the Gods" - Once upon a time, the people of the Three Isles had no gods, and sent men to seek out those who might answer prayers. They decided to check on what sort of deities they might be getting...

"The Jest of the Gods" - The gods had need of laughter, and thus created the soul of a mighty king, containing pride above the common run of kings, then sent it to live in the body of a slave. But they forgot that the slave with a king's soul might have his own ideas...

"The Journey of the King" - The King has summoned his prophets to tell him what lies at the end of his last journey.

"The King That Was Not" - The King commissioned sculptures of Pegana's gods, who were charmed with the idea. They didn't allow for what sculptors whose lives hang in the balance might produce...

"The Land of Time" - How a king and his armies did battle with time.

"A Legend of the Dawn" - How Inzana, child of the gods, played with her golden ball. This is a Just-So story explaining sunrise, sunset, eclipses and the like (the kid is careless about where she throws her favourite toy, and the gods have to get it back every night).

"The Men of Yarnith" - A creation story.

"Mlideen" - After the city had created 99 false idols, they created the 100th, so the gods sent an avalanche to wipe them out. Human beings being the quick learners that they are :), guess what the next people to come along did?

"Night and Morning" - A meeting at sunrise between Night and Morning, wherein he tells her of all that has come to pass on his watch before she turns away to forget him.

"The Relenting of Sarnidac" - When the gods departed from the earth, how is it that one city alone was spared to have the last of the temples?

"The Secret of the Gods" "The South Wind" - prophets who discerned secrets of the gods, and what befell them.

"The Sorrow of Search" - Another tale of Khanazar.

"Time and the Gods" - How the gods learned that their servant Time and his dripping sword cannot be trusted, even by Them.

"Usury" - Each of Yann's many gems is a Life, and he loans each out as a usurer, that they may be cut and polished...

"The Vengeance of Men" - How men took vengeance on the gods for setting the Pestilence upon them.

"When the Gods Slept" - Three spirits from beyond the Rim have stolen the power of the gods of Pegana while they slept. (Another Just-So story, this time about human character).

Created myths
By EA Solinas
Lord Dunsany, one of the earliest writers of fantasy as we know it, was particularly a master of creating fictional mythologies -- stories that read like old tales of creation, gods and heroes, but which never had anything to do with real-life myths. This series of short stories is connected with "Gods of Pegana," which is currently in print with it in the massive Fantasy Masterworks book, available only in the UK.
In it, you will find tales of Slid, an upstart young god; the Dawnchild, who loses her golden ball; the hideous Pestilence; Time and how it overthrew even what the gods favored; laughter, prophecies, doom and hope, punishment, night and day, gods and human beings.
As usual, he wrote enchantingly. His prose is somewhat biblical in manner, which may scare off people who prefer lighter reads. This isn't something you can really skim, as you can't skim the Mabinogion, the Iliad, or the Eddas. Dunsany had an exquisite manner of writing, and he never skimps on lush details and beautiful descriptions.
A wonderful piece of work. I hope that someone reprints it very soon.
