Absolutely!

I thought I'd wait to review until I'd solved a few. "The book looks nice--It's spiral bound," just doesn't seem like an adequate review. I finished my last puzzle today, so here we go.

Be warned: These are variety cryptics. None of those 15x15 lattice-style grids here. Also be warned: Except for a very few, these are variety cryptics of the highest caliber. There are a couple that you'll finish in just a few minutes, but then you'll come to Kevin Wald's "Trafficking Report", where it takes half an hour just to understand the instructions. His was the last puzzle I solved in this collection, and it also gave me the most satisfaction.

The first volume of had a few editorial hiccups, but this volume was almost perfect. A spoiler regarding John de Cuevas' "Wrap Session", though. There are 5 different solutions that work with the given instructions. Instead of working toward one of those solutions logically, save yourself the tsuris and just notice how the longest entries fit together.

With this particular collection (and volume 1 as well), I find myself coveting the brains of the constructors. How smart do you have to be to conceive one of these beauties? If you love variety cryptics, you absolutely have to own this collection. Absolutely!

Very hard, and nearly all very high quality

This is a review that applies to *both* vols 1 & 2.
These are very difficult puzzles! A number of well-known and not-so-well-known people contributed, and the diversity shows. I recommend this book if you are comfortable with the whole idea of puzzle-within-a-puzzle. I think the second volume is bit better than the first, but I think those of us who like these types of puzzle should buy both, because they are being released as an independent labor of love by the makers, rather than a large publishing house.
That said, there are a few issues - an occasional typo, or a clue that is so opaque or unfair as to make you want to shake the author by the ears. Some of the puzzles have instructions that are so long and complex that we glazed over before even starting the puzzle. Also, the solutions leave a lot to be desired - they do explain the basic clues and the final diagram, but they do not do much to explain the final goal which you have to discern after completion - ie., some phrase, quote, or unifying theme.
That said, if you know something about how to do these things and are ready for a challenge. by all means buy both these books, so that the authors will keep them coming!

Variety cryptics by the top constructionists

Just getting started on this edition. First three puzzles were excellent. Challenging, but fair (as Cryptics go, that is) with each providing the payoff at the end that is so satisfying in a well-designed variety cryptic. So far, as good as Volume 1!

Completed the book today. Like reading a good novel, you rush to finish it and then feel sad that it's over.

Puzzles are consistently strong and challenging. These types of Cryptics (variety) are my favorites, as both fans and detractors note, they are puzzles within puzzles. The payoffs can be immensely satisfying and though most reveal themselves towards the end of the clue solving process, they can be very helpful in "backing into" those answers to cryptic clues that seem to be evading you. Also, though grid construction varies widely, as a general rule I would say that these cryptics leave fewer "unchecked" letters than the crossword-style cryptics which improves the odds of 100% completion (and total satisfaction).

AND SODS is a collection of short stories and essays from Lawrence Gray, a much-loved screenplay writer who has lived in Hong Kong for many years. Like the man himself, the work is unpredictable and varied. The items range from straightforward tales in classic short story format, to pieces of writing which are more experimental in nature. And, also like the man himself, the stories range from being funny to being thought-provoking to being clever to being downright annoying! And sometimes they mange to be all these things at once, but overlaid, of course, with more than a touch of English charm. Gray, whatever you think of his opinions, is always worth listening to. He has a distinctive style, a strong sense of fun, and a high level of passionate energy. And in classic British style, he manages to avoid getting too angry, even when dealing with controversial subjects. There's always a genial, laid-back, consider-all-the-factors stance. He has also had a fascination with cultures and identity. So although he is very English, he is also clearly intrigued by "foreign-ness" and by the ways cultures interact with each other. And one gets the view that the many years he has spent in Hong Kong have changed him, too, and detached him from his roots. So as well as the "Englishman Abroad" elements, you'll find many Hong Kong references in this collection, and other elements, such as references to Hindi rap music. By being a literary activist, organizing writers' groups and movie-industry gatherings, and being founder of the Hong Kong Writers' Circle, he has become well-known in his adopted home town. About the Author
LAWRENCE GRAY was born and educated in the UK and took BA honours in Economics and Politics from Leeds University. He has lived in Hong Kong since 1993. Gray founded the London Screenwriters' Workshop, which became Europe's largest screenwriters' organisation before evolving into the many UK screenwriting organisations and courses which are now part of the UK cultural environment. In Hong Kong he founded the Hong Kong Writers' Circle and chaired the group for twenty years, publishing many collections of stories from a wide variety of Hong Kong writers. Gray has taught screenwriting in various cities around the world, and was one of the first to professionalize the industry. He has written, produced and directed a number of films in both English and Cantonese, and has worked on numerous screenplays for various film projects from India, to China to Hollywood. He has won the PAWS award for drama and the Hong Kong Film Finance Forum's award for best Hong Kong film project of the year. He is currently directing a feature film. He has worked as a television scriptwriter in each of the UK and Singapore, contributing episodes to popular TV series. As a writer of prose he relishes the nuances of his own northern English culture and the subtle twists that many years in Hong Kong have produced; but fears that the very things that make his topics interesting to those who experience such cultural displacement make it less accessible to the wider world; hence his persistence in writing screenplays and now in directing feature films aiming to break down this resistance. The world is more united than ever and whereas he has little faith in the concept of universal stories, he does have faith that all stories, presented well, can within the context of modern technology gain at least widespread, if not universal, recognition and appreciation.

Rafal Kudlinski is a Polish physicist and journalist. Joan: Drop Dead Diva is his first novel, which he decided to write the moment he heard Joan Rivers is dead. Joan was very special to him. Her jokes were often taken out of his mouth. As much he admires true artists he hates pseudo-celebrities who have nothing special but gain popularity with the masses.

If you love Joan Rivers

Hilarious book about hilarious person. If you love Joan Rivers, you'll have hell of a good time with this book. For the first novel of this author, it's one piece of a very good writing. Be warned about the language, but if you've heard any of her stand-ups, you won't be suprised. Must read for fans of recently passed away JR.

Fantastic Compilation-Enjoyed Well!

First of all I must say this. If anyone is looking at this book right now he/she must definitely be a fan of Joan Rivers. Joan: Drop Dead Diva: (Joan Rivers returns) by Rafal Kudlinski will definitely impress the fans and they are going to enjoy this for sure. The story includes her own experiences in life and I love this book.

Rafal Kudlinski has used a very lively language and while reading the book I felt that the incidents are happening right in front of me. This book is a fun reading and I enjoyed well. Very easy to read, with juicy characters and that spark Joan was famous for. Author created some behind-the-scenes moments from Joan's life, that it is hard to belive he was not there. I received a copy of the proof of this book for my honest review.

At first I was skeptical of even reading this book. I thought it was going to be porn material. I was assured that it wasn't and after reading the first recipe, I couldn't wait to read the 29 others. The "Sisters" have recipes for women for almost every "wrong" done by their men. Even if you are happily married, reading the recipes you'll recognize scenarios that your girlfriends have complained about. I laughed so hard I snorted!! The Sisters have a website: sistersscrewed.com where they have a sample recipe if you want to check out what kind of experience you're about to encounter. I tried to take a screenshot photo - hopefully it's not distorted - but if it is, you now know where to get the original. Great book to give to your gal pal going through divorce, breakup, or pity party, OR just to have some great laugh-out-loud, streaming tears, snorting fun.

Michael Storrings is an award-winning designer, illustrator, and art director working in New York City.
