About the Author
Educated at North Texas State University (now UNT) in the 1970s, Tony Burnett is an award winning poet and songwriter. His poetry and short fiction have been extensively published in national literary magazines and anthologies including, most recently, Sixfold, Connotation Press, Short Story America, Frontier Tales, Texas Poetry Calendar, Poetry @ Round Top anthology, Tidal Basin Review, Red Dirt Review and Toucan Literary Magazine. He is Editor in Chief of Scribe, the on-line blog of the Writers' League of Texas with over 6000 subscribers and the currently serves as Board President for the Writers' League of Texas. He makes his home in rural central Texas near Temple with his trophy wife, Robin.

his dialogues and settings transport the reader into situations best viewed from an armchair and reading lamp

Tony Burnett’s new collection of short stories, Southern Gentlemen, takes the reader into a world where the sweat trickling down a sunburned neck and the Spanish moss swaying in the breeze are as vividly brought forth as the working class heroes of his stories. From a tweaked out biker to a confused coyote to a genteel hangman, his dialogues and settings transport the reader into situations best viewed from an armchair and reading lamp. Burnett captures the reality of his settings with a descriptive prose that tells the reader he knows of which he speaks. The dialogue is gritty, real, and straight from life, flowing naturally as the characters he has created. The thirteen short stories blend genres and settings as easily as turning the pages of his book. From a mystic surrealism to the grittiest of reality, these stories suck you in and hold you in their spell. I realized this when I found myself standing at the stove with his book in one hand and a spoon in the other hand forgetting to stir the soup. If O. Henry and James McMurtry could collaborate their writing, this would be their spawn.

Well written and richly descriptive, each one of these short stories leaves you ready to dive into another to find out more about the interesting characters and plots that make this a witty, funny and enjoyable collection. From an illegal immigrant smuggling gone awry to an orphaned teen inheriting a fortune, this collection offers a variety of situations that are entertaining and fun to ready. Short stories lovers will delight in this master storyteller's book.

A Well-written collection of stories

Tony Burnett is a master of the short story. Southern Gentlemen is the perfect title for this collection of stories about - southern gentlemen. Some are great people, others are a bit shady, while some are scary. This book has a story for everyone. My favorite is the story of the man who watches the woman emerge from her hotel at exactly eight minutes past the hour for several hours. It has a surprise ending.
