Provocative and entertaining

For those not willing or able to make it through tomes like War and Peace and Anna Karenina, these short stories provide and excellent taste of the works of one of the world's greatest literary figures. Tolstoy is a provocative author who asks us to think about what really matters while spinning entertaining tales of simple people. I highly recommend anything written by him.

I enjoyed the stories inside the book when I was a school boy. Today when the book was read in the class ,My students said ," They feels the moral of the story is really touching them." Writer is very successful to present his message or the moral at end of the story. Very enjoying, but definitely this is not a cheap entertainment type story book.

Fun material for chess fans

This is a nice collection of chess "stuff." The first part contains a bit of poetry, some short stories and other bon-bons. My favorite of the short stories is entitled "Last Round," and features a game being played by an aging master. A poignant and yet positive story. The second part of the book is composed of chess problems and some classic chess matches. Masters whose games are included here include Morphy, Alekhine, Petrosian, as well as others. The final essay? "The greatest game of chess every played," a 1922 contest between the great Alekhine and Bogolyubov. Is it really number one? That's part of the fun, as the reader will have to make up his or her own mind about this claim. . . .

If you enjoy chess (and I used to a great deal), this is one cool book! I received it as a Christmas gift in 1973, and it represents one of my favorite among such gifts.

If you are looking for a unusual book, or one that tells of Chess lore, this one's for you. Variety of stories, chess games, puzzles and problems. Easy to read... games in descriptive notation. I purchased this book in 1973. Greatest game is Bogolyubov vs Alekhine, Hastings, 1922.

The title perfectly describes the book. After you are done studying your instruction manuals, you can pick this up and read strictly for fun. Chernev's choices are excellent. The first part is a series of short stories by different writers which are thoroughly pleasant ... also some very mysterious things go on. The second part is a bunch of puzzles and games. The annotation particularly is impressive. All in all, a wonderful chess companion (and I just happen to have one for sale at Bill's Books at Amazon Marketplace). Enjoy!!

About the Author
Joseph Lewis French (1858-1936) was a prolific writer and anthologist known for his popular themed collections, such as Masterpieces of Mystery (1921, 4 vols.) and Great Pirate Stories (1922). French led an active literary life: early in his career he founded two magazines, The New West (circa 1887) and The Wave (circa 1890). He then went on to work for newspapers across the country and contribute articles and poetry to periodicals. However, despite publishing over twenty-five books between 1918 and his death in 1936, French struggled financially. Desperate for work in 1927, French was urged by the tabloid daily New York Graphic to write an article on his life's story, which the scandal sheet's editors titled "I'm Starving--Yet I'm in Who's Who as the Author of 27 Famous Books."

what exactly is a riddle story?

In 1920, Joseph Lewis French gathered together some tales that he called 'riddle stories'. In the preface it identifies a riddle story as "the most naive form of the mystery story. It may contain a certain element of the supernatural - be tinged with mysticism - but its motive and the revelation thereof must be frankly materialistic - of the earth, earthy." (IMO, his definition of a riddle story is a riddle.)

The short stories included in this anthology are:
The Mysterious Card by Cleveland Moffett - Couldn't wait to see what the card actually said.
The Great Valdez Sapphire by Anonymous - Just okay, but has a good ending.
The Oblong Box by Edgar Allan Poe - It's Poe; of course it's good. Is the movie on DVD?
The Birth Mark by Nathaniel Hawthorne - Typical Hawthorne. Sad, sad, sad.
A Terribly Strange Bed by Wilkie Collins - Very clever bad guys with very clever tools.
The Torture by Hope by Villiers de l'Isle Adam - Good thing we have the Geneva Convention now.
The Box with the Iron Clamps by Florence Marryat - Gruesome.
My Fascinating Friend by William Archer - Truly a fascinating story. Surprising ending.
The Lost Room by Fitz-James O'Brien - Odd. Not sure how to explain the happenings.

About the Author
Susan McNabb is an American newspaper columnist and author. She was raised in Asheville, North Carolina, has an English Literature degree from the University of Tennessee, and lived and worked as a Los Angeles model and commercial actor for nearly three decades before returning to North Carolina and settling in the small town of Tryon with her husband and rescued dogs. Susan writes Tryon Diary, a weekly observational column in the Tryon Daily Bulletin, “The World’s Smallest Daily Newspaper,” has published a collection of her columns by the same name, and writes romantic fiction under the name Suki McMinn.

Take a trip to Tryon, North Carolina!

Tryon Diary is a collection of thoughts and little stories from the small town of Tryon in North Carolina. It's written by a person who is fairly new to Tryon but is now a part of the town and the life of this wonderful place in North Caroline. Her perspective as both an insider and an outsider is unique and makes for some very interesting tales.

I am lucky enough to have spend a few days in Tryon a couple of years ago. I loved it there and was thrilled to read this book because it reminded me of the lovely time I spent there. But you don't have to have visited Tryon to enjoy Tryon Diary. It's written in a way that makes feel like you're already there. You just need a glass of tea and some music by Nina Simone (a Tryon local) and you're all set.

I have to warn you, though. This book may make you want to move to Tryon!

Susan McNabb's "Tryon Diary: Tales from the Friendliest Town in the South" presents a quaint and often hilarious portrait of her hometown, Tryon, NC, in this collection of her weekly columns from the Tryon Daily Bulletin. Her essays evoke a sense of community which can only be found these days in the smaller towns in the south, many of which have been eclipsed by the ever-growing larger cities near them. Her writing is clean and her sharp sense of humor shines through every column. Each time I read one of her pieces I end up wishing I could live in Tryon.

Reading Susan’s book has given me a fresh look at the place I’ve called home for almost thirty years. She writes with equal measures of warmth, wit, and grace, and captues the unique essence of small town life in Tryon, NC. If I didn’t live here already, I’d be sorely tempted to start packing my bags.
