A fascinating piece of Hardy

As a great admirer of "Jude the Obscure" and "Tess of the D'Ubervilles," I was intrigued when I saw this collection of some of Hardy's shorter works, and was not disapointed. The common theme running through these sketches is Hardy's dissatisfaction with the institution of marriage. Written in Hardy's impeccable style, these stories are short and biting looks at the circumstances that surround and influence marriage. You'll find few happy endings among these tales, but they are an enjoyable read. It's always a pleasure to immerse oneself in Hardy's world and language, and the twisted little plots Hardy creates show a side of his genius I had not previously realized.
These stories are not as profound as some of Hardy's other works, and, by necessity, the characters are not as well developed. However, I would still recommend this book. For a fan of Tess or Jude, it's a fascinating look into the mind of Hardy at the time he was writing these novels. And for someone who's never read any Hardy, they are an easy and enjoyable introduction to a wonderful author.

Just wonderful

What wonderful language! What wonderful characters! If you're looking for happy endings, don't look here. Tragedy, suicide, and deceivement abound in these short stories. (My 1965 hard-cover copy also includes A FEW CRUSTED CHARACTERS.) But if you appreciate remarkable writing that will take your breath away, this is it! Comparable to Hardy's THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE.

The finest writer of the 19th Century

Many people consider Thomas Hardy to be a great novelist and poet; but he is equally a great story writer. These are 19th Century stories; so they do not start in the middle and expect the reader to infer what the author leaves out; they are are not pared to the bone. They start at the beginning, describing vividly the setting of the place and the history of the leading characters, and build up to a proper conclusion. Without trying to derogate 20th Century writers like Hemmingway, these stories are all the better for it. They could have been easily extended to fully blown novels. They have all the touches that one expects from Hardy: vivid decription of Wessex, tragedy untouched by sentimentality; a solid style with touches of literary genius; and a perceptive understanding of the relationship between men and women, people and their environment, and a keen understanding of rustic life just before it was swept away by the arrival of the radio, the telephone, the motor vehicle, electricity and other aspects of modernity. If you love Jude or Tess, read this book. As soon as I had finished it, I hunted down his other short story collections, Wessex Tales, etc., which are just as good.

Anybody's got a right to criticize the things that happened. But don't criticize the men who did them unless you've been in their shoes. Ever since I came back, the object of my military fiction has been to put somebody as normal as you, or as I was, into a war zone. And I hope to God neither you nor your son ever has an opportunity to compare my fiction with the real thing. A shorter edition of this book was published under the title The Military Dimension.

Good short stories of war

Most of these stories were pretty good. I was surprised by the fantasy parts in some of these stories because I expected all of them to be mostly sci-fi / military. The stories that were set in Viet Nam were all pretty good. Drake's leaning on Mech. Infantry gets old, he should write about light fighters too. The story about fraging the LT was great. The soldier justified killing another man because his buddy was killed while sneaking a joint while on a mission. He was sneaking it cause the LT wouldn't allow dope. So his buddies death is blamed on the Lieutenant. Classic!
I like that Drake doesn't make villians out of many of his officers. Most are soldiers that have earned the confidence and respect of their men by being charismatic and competant. We would all like to work for that kind of officer.
I give this 3 stars because I like it. The 4th star is for great and the stories just didn't get me there

This is a wonderful collection of Drake's works. It provides an insight into what makes his work truly stand out from the crowd. The Vietnam stories are among his earliest works and are stunning. "Have you ever seen a Sheridan burn?" is forever etched into my memory.

This book will make you a Drake fain!

No question that David Drake is one of the pre-eminent military SF writers out there, and this book is a microcosm of what makes him so great. Realistic action, gritty characters, and a quick moving story make these stories some of the better examples of Drake writing out there.

Some of these stories are based on Drake's own experience in Vietnam, all but one with a SF twist (will talk about that later). Others are about combat in the future, but from a grunt's perspective, so they still involve the soldier putting his neck on the line in closing with and destroying the enemy.

Notable standouts that will stay with me for a while are "Something Had to Be Done," about a vampire who gets drafted into the Army, and "The Way We Die." The latter is the only non-SF story in the book (at least I couldn't detect an SF element). It's about the officer-enlisted relationship and how it can go horribly south from an enlisted man's point of view. As a military officer myself, the lesson hit home.

Unlike many books, the Introduction and Afterword are both worth reading as well, as they speak to Drake's motivatio for writing, and provide a background which make the stories that much more believable.

Overall, Drake fans will get more of what they love, and newbies to Drake's work will come back for more.

Saved My Relationship!

This book seriously saved my relationship! My boyfriend has a gambling problem and whenever I tried to bring it up to him he got really defensive and acted like I was crazy or something. I downloaded this book on our Kindle hoping to find a solution to how to approach him or get him help. He ended up reading it and finally admitting he has a problem.

I honestly don;t think he will ever stop being addicted to gambling but this book has taught him how to control himself and resist the urge to gamble or at least to gamble "more" responsibly.

This book is great! It is helpful, not only to individuals who are addicted to gambling, but also to anyone who is interested in this problem or knows someone who might be struggling with it. The society is exposed to so many gambling venues nowadays. In my opinion, the access to gambling games has increased even more with technology development. What always intrigued me was what attracts people to this so much? So many people lose important things because of this addiction, such as their families, homes and jobs. The author, Stefan Pylarinos, covers all the questions you might have regarding gambling, he offers a step-by-step strategy to recognize if you or a close one have a gambling problem, how to overcome it and prevent a relapse in the future. This is a book I will definitely recommend!

Perfect for solvers who like a challenge

This series is, bar none, the best assemblage of crossword puzzles I've come across. I've been a Will Shortz fan for quite a while, so I've done a *lot* of puzzles. This collection is very unique, featuring many interesting twists and challenges. Most of the puzzles have a theme, which you usually have to figure out to solve the puzzle completely - a puzzle in a puzzle! Just wonderful.

Excellent & Hard Collection

Bought both this book #2 and the original, and they are excellent. There are very few easy clues in the whole book. Most clues have multiple possible answers, and many are very tricky or clever without a 'question mark' ending. These take a while to solve and are very entertaining. The spiral bound book and paper quality are very good. Good change of pace from the New York Times camp.
