About the Author
Tom “Dizzy” Chisholm was born in Boston, Massachusetts August 13, 1928 to Canadian emigrant parents, Frank and Mary (née Tonary) Chisholm. He was the fourth child among four sisters, Clare, Catherine, Grace, and Christine. Though Tom spent a lot of time in Nova Scotia visiting family, he is a true Bostonian. He grew up in Dorchester, attended St. Peter's School, worked first at the Old Corner Bookstore (still standing proud on the Freedom Trail!), then at Braves Field, and Fenway Park. In his spare time, Dizzy and the boys played football for the Dorchester Gaels in the Boston Park League. They practiced at Ronan Park, played home games at Town Field. Tom then joined the Navy in 1949 serving on the U.S.S. Saufley as a fire control technician. He eventually studied electronics which led to a successful career. He married Malvana Allen in October 1961. Together they had four daughters, and now have five granddaughters. Mr. Chisholm is now retired and living in Florida with his wife of over 50 years.

Bad copy, do not buy.

This is the second Kindle version of Plum I've been burned on. Haven't gotten further than Location 32, because of all the errors. No apostrophes, multiple misspellings, general punctuation issues. Terrible, terrible quality. I'm attempting to get a refund now, even though I bought it several weeks ago and am only now just getting around to reading it.

Do not buy this version.

Contains Wodehouse's only mystery (in addition to other stories). Not quite vintage Wodehouse but certainly funny and well worth reading. It is not in the same class as the Jeeves or Blandings stories but close. I only gave it 4 stars simply because I compared to his best works. A 2 star Wodehouse book is better than a 4 star with most other writers.

Numerous spelling errors, combined words, lack of punctuation make it difficult to read at times.
Every page contains at least 4-8 errors.

A sweet, romantic short story with a great ending!

Two And A Half Almost Marriages is the latest offering from Mita Jain and it is a short story about a girl who is looking for her ideal love and her adventures along the way.

The cover is sweet and the blurb intriguing. Having read and enjoyed Mita's previous books, I was ecstatic when she told me that she had a new story. I jumped at the chance to review it and as usual was entertained.

Just like this book, I read her story Meeting Miss Konni Chiwa and had absolutely loved it. So somewhere I compared this story with that one. While Meeting Miss Konni Chiwa was funny, romantic and heart touching right from the start, Two And A Half Almost Marriages picks up on the heart touching and romantic factor in the later part of the story. I cant say it was funny because the subtle humour inserted didn't get registered as smoothly as it should have.

I loved the eventual hero with his quiet support and the love he always had for the heroine. The heroine was immature and almost stupid in this story and I could not connect with her which is unfortunate because she is the main character here.

Mita's writing style is simple, fluid and she handles the interview format of the story expertly. Her concise style of telling a heart warming story and capability of eliciting the right emotions from the readers is her strength which she uses to her advantage in this one too. The ending left me appreciative of her creativity and was bowled over by the brilliant twist at the end. :)

Overall, I enjoyed this sweet short story but felt that with the amazing message and the suspense that it used, the story had great potential which was not tapped as per my expectations. 3.5 out of 5 to it and recommended to everyone. You will enjoy reading this story especially the message it hides and the witty idea that the author has used to develop it. Now I am eager to start on Mita's next work and hopefully she will have a new book out soon. :)

Easy read , nice story with good ending

I got this Short story from the Author for an Honest feedback.
And that's what I am going to give.

First the narrative is simple and clean with not many complicated words and smooth flow.
The story is about a girl narrating her love episodes. there are 3 such episodes at various stages of her life and final which ends in marriage.

The stories till the last page is not too interesting for me. its just another love story. The author mentions that its a Rom-Com. I did not get the comedy element in the story.

The saving grace for the story is the last page. the ending is nice and gives perspective about the whole story.

I give this story a 3/5 for the nice ending

About the Author
Educated at North Texas State University (now UNT) in the 1970s, Tony Burnett is an award winning poet and songwriter. Tony Burnett’s new collection of short stories, Southern Gentlemen, takes the reader into a world where the sweat trickling down a sunburned neck and the Spanish moss swaying in the breeze are as vividly brought forth as the working class heroes of his stories. From a tweaked out biker to a confused coyote to a genteel hangman, his dialogues and settings transport the reader into situations best viewed from an armchair and reading lamp. Burnett captures the reality of his settings with a descriptive prose that tells the reader he knows of which he speaks. The dialogue is gritty, real, and straight from life, flowing naturally as the characters he has created. The thirteen short stories blend genres and settings as easily as turning the pages of his book. From a mystic surrealism to the grittiest of reality, these stories suck you in and hold you in their spell. I realized this when I found myself standing at the stove with his book in one hand and a spoon in the other hand forgetting to stir the soup. If O. Henry and James McMurtry could collaborate their writing, this would be their spawn.

A Well-written collection of stories

Tony Burnett is a master of the short story. Southern Gentlemen is the perfect title for this collection of stories about - southern gentlemen. Some are great people, others are a bit shady, while some are scary. This book has a story for everyone. My favorite is the story of the man who watches the woman emerge from her hotel at exactly eight minutes past the hour for several hours. It has a surprise ending.

Just what I've been looking for.

Books of diagramless crosswords are hard to find, so I was glad to come across this one. Whether it's "too hard" or "too easy" is a subjective thing, but I have found it to be just right. It's hard enough to be a challenge, but not so hard that it's frustrating. 99% of the time the clues make sense and feel fair, if you get my drift. There also aren't a lot of pop culture clues, which is what I prefer. Occasionally you find clues repeated on different puzzles in the same book, or even from puzzles I've done elsewhere (if I have to fill in the answer "olio" or "oleo" one more time... I'm looking at you, USA Today!) It would have been nice, too, if they had printed the grid on the far side of the page from the crease so you don't have to hold the book down while filling in your answer. But overall I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from it.

I'm glad I did

I usually stick with the New York Times puzzle books, but with the dearth of diagramless puzzles, I figured I'd give this a go. I'm glad I did. I'm really enjoying it and just purchased Volume 2. This would be a five-star review had there been more variety with the clues. Once Emmons comes up with a clue for a word, he simply uses it again as the answer is repeated from puzzle to puzzle. Otherwise, it's terrific--challenging but solvable, with a variety of different sized puzzles. Keep 'em coming.

fantastic journey through the nature of humankind

Be forwarned that if you pick this book up you will need to have all you affairs in order for at least several hours. Once you pick this up you won't be able to put it down. George has captured the nature and spirit of the type of wary travellers one might encounter in traveling any country, after the tours are over and the sights have been seen. His insight into the mentality of the hardship of the more forelorn, expatriated type of traveller is both honest and revealling and keeps the reader entranced. The book takes you into the beaches boats and bars of Baja to meet characters who remind the reader that we all have some command of our destiny and that we all have a story. As a sailor and a bachelor I found it a very entertaining view of people and humankind that I can easily relate to.

The book was very well written with flowing, concise stories that were easy to read. The stories are very entertaining if you have dreamed of sailing off into the sunset or even if that thought hasn't crossed your mind yet.
The storytelling painted vivid pictures of coves with bobbing sailboats and icey cold Pacifico's parked on rickety wooden tables. I can almost see the rings left by George's bottles at Blackbeards down in La Paz!
George, you did an outstanding job creating this book! Thanks for living life and going to Mexico to have the inspiration to write this.

I find that the next best thing to sailing is reading aboutsailing and adventures of sailing. "Baja Sailor Tales" is acollection of many wonderful adventures that allows the reader to live in a world most of us will only wonder about! Anyone going cruising to La Paz and beyond or those of us fortunate to have had their own adventures there, will find that the author mixes reality with rich fictional characters and takes you on several emotional adventures that leaves the reader waiting for BST Part II! This is a fun read that should be enjoyed with either an icy margarita or a "cold one"... Enjoy!!

A Great Escape

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. After a long day, it was nice to drift off into a bit of positive fantasy. Although I enjoyed all of the stories, I loved The Chair! I would give just about anything to have a chance to rest in that chair, I could almost feel my own troubles washing away while reading the story. The focus on witchcraft was refreshing, I appreciated the positive exposure to a subject I know little about. I recommend the stories in this book to anyone who desires a quick escape from the mundane. After reading the stories, I had the feeling one gets when waking from a good dream.

This book is very magical, but it is not fantasy fiction! It is, in fact, very realistic. The stories are set in various 21st century real places and are grounded in current issues and events. The characters are people we recognize in our daily lives, but something extra-ordinary happens in each story--a magical twist. These stories are refreshingly varied, yet some of the characters reappear as the wheel of the year turns. The stories range from heart-warming to thought-provoking. I plan to re-read them again and again!

D.M. Read has a knack for describing her characters so well that I feel as if I know them. Each one teaches me something. I could relate to the characters in The Chair, as if they were written about me personally. I loved the spirituality of Somewhere a Drum Waits for Me and the positive messages in The Glamour of a Witch. The stories are a wonderful tapestry of pro-feminist, Goddess fiction, mystery, and history. Reading this book is the best mini vacation I can take at the end of a stressful day!

About the Author
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875to actors Mary Jane Richards and T. H. Edgar. As an infant he wasadopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, beforetransferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898 he published a collection of poems called The Mission that Failed, and subsequently left the army to become acorrespondent for Reuters.South African war correspondent for The Daily Mail followed and hisarticles were later published as Unofficial Dispatches. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentialsas a war correspondent. He thenedited the Rand Daily Mail, but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, he at first reportedon crimes and hanging trials, before becomingeditor of The Evening News. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing Smithy, a collection of soldier stories, and The Four Just Men. The latter waspublished with the ending removed as anadvertising stunt and he offered £500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallacealso worked as a journalist on The Standard, The Star, The Week-End Racing Supplement and The Story Journal. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his Sanders of the River books. In 1923 he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidatefor Blackpool. mHis first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countlessarticles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories,Wallacewrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by The Bible. He died in 1932 whilst workingon the screenplay for King Kong,

A M Harte excels at dark fiction in Solid Moments

Solid Moments is an anthology of short stories by British author A M Harte. I follow her on twitter and I also read her site whenever I can; therefore I was only mildly surprised when I found that I had already read some of the stories included in the book. That did not detract me from enjoying it, however. I always find it difficult to review anthologies, because due to their very nature quality varies a lot from one story to the next. I'm happy to say that Solid Moments offers a high level of reader satisfaction. The stories are on the short side, making for fast reading that leaves no time for boredom.

Harte's stories are dark fiction: more often than not, they will leave an interestingly bitter aftertaste in your mouth. One can appreciate several recurring themes haunting the characters, such as depression, self-doubt and alienation. I've also noticed that Harte favours the disfunctional protagonist couple, and here couple does not necessarily involve love of any kind. As a matter of fact, in several stories such love is missing completely. I like how Harte handles the dynamics of using two protagonist characters, sometimes switching points of view, sometimes not, and often giving us a surprise or two -even spooky ones.

An unexpected bonus is the section at the end of the book where the author explains the story behind each tale. I loved it for two reasons: the first one was that it took me back to my years of early science fiction reading, when I devoured those Isaac Asimov's anthologies where Asimov added one or two paragraphs before every tale and explained to us readers how the sotry had come into being and how it had been published.

The second reason why I liked this section was that for several of the stories there was a bonus, such as the tale wherein each sentence starts with correlative alphabet letters, or the one where each line of dialogue starts with the last word of the previous one. I actually went back to check some of those details, a somewhat annoying operation on an e-reader and of which Harte is absolutely innocent of.

In short, I enjoyed this book and recommend it heartily to all fans of fresh, dark, brooding fiction. Not many happy endings here.

Short, fun read.

Single Mom Sheila Mason has returned to Amethyst after her divorce from her son's father. She grew up in this small town and had planned on marrying her childhood boyfriend after college. However, after a short whirlwind romance at college she eloped with Travis and subsequently bore him a son, Dev. The marriage was doomed and when it ended, she and Dev returned to Amethyst. Her childhood friend, Jeb, was now the town sheriff and still very much in love with her.
This is a short story, with a good plot line, well written. I enjoyed the book and look forward to more from this author.

About the Author
Saki was the pen name of the British writer Hector Hugh Munro (1870 1916). In addition to his short stories, of which he was an acknowledged master, he also wrote a full-length play, "The Watched Pot", in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, "The Rise of the Russian Empire"; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington"; a parody of Alice in Wonderland", "The Westminster Alice"; and a fantasy about England under German occupation, When William Came".

Proofreader's Nightmare

I love Saki. These are some of the best, most biting, hilarious gems ever written in the English language. However, the Kindle edition is so hard to read, that I must subtract two stars for the formatting.

The Kindle edition is very hard to read because of the awkward line breaks and kerning. I believe the digitization of this book to have been untouched by human hands, with no proofreading at all. Some lines have four words evenly spaced out to each margin. In other instances, a hyphenated word will have an additional hyphen inserted midway to make a line break. Other pages have "widows or orphans", a solitary word on one page. Each time I encounter one of these, the eye and the brain go "Ker-thunk!" an it spoils the sense and rhythm of the story.

Not worth even the low Kindle price; too many aggravations.

It is Saki so of course the stories are marvelous. My one star is for the Kindle Edition. Every other line only contains two words so it is not a smooth block of text for the eye to follow.

Great Short Stories

This is the third collection of short stories by Saki, which was originally published in 1911. This collection includes 28 short stories which are very loosely centered on Clovis Sangrail (a somewhat mischievous upper-class youth), although there are several stories in the collection which are not linked at all to that character. Many of the stories are fable-like, but the mood of the stories varies greatly. Whatever dark, satirical, cynical, or just plain bizarre, each is a treat for the reader.

All these stories are worthwhile, but some of my favorites are "Tobermory", "Sredni Vashtar", "The Music on the Hill", and "The Unrest-Cure" to name a few. The quality of the stories is high throughout the collection. This book appears to currently be out of print; however there are many free versions now available on the web. This is fortunate for everyone who wants to read his stories.

Saki (the name came from the cupbearer in "The Rubayat" of Omar Khayyam) is the pseudonym of H. H. Munro (Dec. 18, 1870 - Nov. 13, 1916) a subject of the British Empire who was born in Burma the son of a Scottish military policeman. Sadly, Munro was killed in France while serving during World War I by a sniper.
