Entertaining and Amusing American Short Stories

I downloaded this book for free, partially spurred by having recently re-read an O.Henry short story contained in an old text book. My expectations were low, but as I read each story, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. O. Henry has a very unique and amusing style, with a dry sense of humour running through all the stories. Some come across as a little old-fashioned, but overall, they are a good, light and amusing read

Exactly what I was hoping for!

I'm pretty picky when it comes to what horror I read, but the cover of this book grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. I thought "What the hell?" and grabbed it. From the first story, Bug Boy, Kurtz had me hooked. I sure hope the "Vol. 1" is a true indication that more volumes are to come. I can't wait!!

Great Fast and Creepy Read

Loved it!
This is a compilation of a bunch of short stories all by the same author, so if you're looking to stick around with the same character and watch him/her grow, then this is not the format for you. But if you want to get through some creepy stories before bed, then it's great! There's a bunch of stories with various characters of various ages, genders, etc, so everything is fresh! Some have crazy twists, some are dark and you know where the darkness is going and can only follow along in terror. It's not a terribly long book either. You can breeze through it quickly. The font is a nice sans serif that you're used to seeing on a screen, meaning a digital version is probably easy on the eyes (I got a physical copy, but looked at the first few pages online). The writing style is informal, almost conversational at times, so it's not heavy and filled with words you have to look up. It also makes visualizing the settings easy and engaging. There's a few grammatical errors, but I think the writer self-edits so it's natural not to pick up on all of one's own misspellings. The pace of the stories is fast (that's the nature of a short story), and can keep you well entertained for the duration of a tale.
If you like creepypastas and spooky stories then I recommend this book! Remember to read it alone at night :)

This Monkey Shines

From giant parasites, to classic closet monsters, to children baiting pedophiles, Matt Kurtz's collection of horror yarns is bound to chill the marrow of even the most time-worn fan of frights. Gathering twelve of his best short stories which had previously been published in various anthologies and magazines, this book offers a collection of Kurtz's work on its own for the first time (and not the last, seeing how he has three more on the way). This first volume of Monkey's Box of Horrors entertained me and kept me going, leaping to the next story on the heels of one just finished. The collection is a great throwback to the heyday of horror short stories, conjuring up fond memories of curling up with Stephen King's Night Shift and Clive Barker's Books of Blood. Sometimes Kurtz's creepy creatures are classic in style, but he always finds a unique spin and makes sure they leave no nerve unscarred . This is a solid debut from a talent I think we're only going to see darkly germinate from here on in, and I, for one, am along for the ride into the Monkey's liar.

Steal, you Clever Boy

We love our gentlemen thieves, don't we? Raffles is a noble thief, should one ever care to combine those two sentiments to describe someone who steals your stuff. If you don't have good jewelry or good silver/gold, you might be safe. But if you have a safe, be prepared for its cracking. Raffles is also a top-notch cricketer, though not really being familiar with that game, I don't quite get what he actually does in the game.

A Thief in the Night is a series of short stories as told from the point of view of Bunny, Raffles' friend and compatriot in crime, each story describing a particular caper and how it was accomplished. Bunny, every bit as complicit in the several crimes detailed, always comes across as an earnest Barney Fife character: somewhat incompetent but dependable in his specific competencies and lack thereof. Raffles constructs his capers keeping in mind how Bunny is likely to (re)act. Bunny is just smart enough to recognize that Raffles has done this and usually takes offense, but Raffles, ever demonstrating the silver tongue, soothes Bunny's feelings and makes his capabilities seem a plus.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. Only one story didn't quite click with me, but I think that had way more to do with the loudness of the woman two tables away breaking my concentration while I was eating breakfast and attempting to read. (Aside: a young girl related to her was getting ready at 8:30 a.m. for a group date to go see a movie at 4:00 p.m. It was her first date with the boy who asked her. At least there was some amusement for my interruption.) I really like caper stories, not so much for the actual stealing (which I'm generally against--unless I can get away with it ), but for the working out of the puzzle. I'm just dumb enough to be kept guessing. Occasionally, I get on the obvious track, but usually the clue train has left the station without me.

I also try to imagine the stories in a modern setting (these take place in Victorian London). These would need some work because of the tremendous advances in security, probably brought on by the progenitors of thieves such as detailed in these stories. Recommended.

Really wanted to like this book

'm not sure what to think of this. Raffles is described as a gentleman thief and I guess that is accurate but I didn't get that feeling that I got with Thomas Crown from the Thomas Crown Affair. And in this addition, it feels choppy. I didn't get any sense of who and why he or his partner in crime, the author of his exploits, do the things they do. Ultimately writing about his cases without bringing depth to the character is unsatisfactory. I read as if I was watching a movie without a feeling of cheering on the main character or hating him.

And part of this may be this version. It is a compilation of stories so they may have left out the first story that gives the background and understanding that would help you feel for the character.

seduced by the name "Raffles"

"Raffles" is a name to conjure with in the Far East. There is an important hotel chain of that name, and Raffles is an iconic figure. However, some literature does not survive its period. This was a rambling, difficult read and I couldn't finish it. I would not recommend.

Sam Benjamin is a graduate of Brown University. He has worked variously as a farmhand, celebrity ghostwriter, massage therapist, and independent filmmaker. Enjoy!

I wasn't sure what to expect with the Hippie Kama Sutra, but I can say that my expectations were blown out of the water... and on to fertile land! The book is surprisingly grounded and abundantly informative. The HKS is everything you could want in a little book (perfect for your coffee table, a gift for a curious friend, or simply to up your own ante in the realms of eco-social and sexual conversation). I could read this in one sitting... and will probably refer to it over and over. And as far as content goes, the illustrations are some of the most inspired I've seen. Enjoy!

9/10. Would bang.

I'm not a hippie (it's too deeply ingrained: I struggle with patchouli and white people dreads make me roll my eyes so hard I sometimes lose my balance) but I WAS born on a commune and have parents who are still longhairs in spirit. My squareness notwithstanding, I enjoy organic produce, sex, people who don't take themselves to seriously, in-jokes, yoga, burritos and marijuana. For a time, I choked down kombucha because the yoga enthusiast / masseuse / dirty little whirlwind I was dating had me thinking it was a good idea. Point being: I'm open minded, man.

Reading The Hippie Kama Sutra made me laugh. Laugh a lot. Little chortles. Outright guffaws. A snigger here and there. In fact, I laughed enough that my fiancee got annoyed and left the room on my first read - but then a day later, I heard the same sounds coming from her, reading the book in another room. Strangely, I learned a few things from the book too - having to do with recipes and superfoods and meditation a little bit. Critically, however, reading Sam and Candice's book, I also got a little horny. It's a strange and wonderful feeling to couple a belly laugh with a scrotal tightening, but if reacting that way to reading good and sexy humor is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

One I started reading I couldn't put it down !

Being a child of the sixties myself I felt young again reading this book.It took me way back to the day's of free love, granny dresses, platform shoes, love beads & CSNY. The mixture of interesting trivia, recipes, jokes,hilarious cartoon art, funny quotes, and mind bending humor kept me flipping the pages. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down.When it was finished I wanted more. The big question is how will they follow this ingenious Best Seller ? This book is an uplifting gift for open minded people of all ages. It's a breath of fresh air, original and provocative. I know I will read it over & over just to get a good laugh. Well Done !

An unusual new slueth

The business of human resources is often fraught with personalities and unpopular decisions. The people that hold these positions must be diligent and knowledgeable, able to make good decisions, often at a moment’s notice.

In Smile Now, Cry Later by Paul McDonald, we meet one such individual. Chuck Restic is in the HR profession and often moonlights as a private detective. His personality is very passive-aggressive based off his real life persona. He uses his corporate skills to solve crimes, which he finds a bit more interesting than his actual corporate job.

His coworkers are often not as caring as he would like, and many of the conversations he has with those working within his company are uncomfortable, but usually necessary. There are sometimes those caught up in circumstances, yet still must be dealt with to keep the company above the law. Ed Vardaresian is one of those, a quiet unassuming man, yet he wears an excessive amount of cologne, which leads to the complaint filed. The accuser is noted for her complaints and the circumstances are those that make it necessary to deal with this issue in a timely manner.

What really creates Chuck’s concern is when Ed, an employee that never calls in sick, disappears not long after his conversation with him. Due to his perceived connection, Chuck determines that he will find out what is happening with the missing employee.

It is here that Chuck gets a dangerous surprise, for Ed is much more than a simple employee. He owns some property and has somehow come up against a billionaire real estate developer as well as the Armenian mob, and his disappearance is decidedly worrisome. His family has no answers and when Chuck digs deeper he finds himself in danger, and that old friends may actually be enemies in his search for Ed. Can he find the answers before another body is found or has his meddling created a murder fest that is cavalcading out of bounds?

MacDonald has given us an interesting private investigator, one that seems unlikely at first glance but quickly wins your confidence. His background in HR is at times a boon, but in other areas a danger. He trusts often too quickly which makes him seem easy. But once he determines the truth, he is like a dog with a bone, digging to find the answers where ever they lead, regardless of the people involved.

The characters are interesting and the mystery is well set, leading the protagonist in directions that sometimes get very dizzying. Yet he sticks with it and keeps you along with his wit and humor.

If you enjoy mystery and people you will find Chuck Restic in Smile Now, Cry Later, a great protagonist. This is a solid work for your library.

Terrific thriller/mystery

Chuck, an HR supervisor discovers one of his more valuable employees is missing and he decides to approach the family under the guise of delivering the missing man’s possessions (after it becomes clear the employee won’t be returning). Upon meeting the employee’s family, Chuck is drawn into the mystery of the man’s disappearance and launches his own semi-investigation which quickly pulls him into an intriguing tale of real estate scams, shady developers, not-so-honest cops, the Armenian mob and a variety of other variables that make this tale a terrific thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I should confess, in an earlier life I had a long career in the commercial real estate business, managed a handful of employees and thus dealt with HR frequently and I grew up in the LA area, so for me this book was incredibly easy to follow – but don’t let the complicated nature deter you, the plot is intricate (and in my opinion educational to those that aren’t experienced in the above), the characters are well developed and interesting and the vivid descriptions through-out the story are well done and accurate.

Smile now, cry later is the first book in the series “Chuck Restic Mystery” by Paul MacDonald, which is Published in January 2015, narrated by Paul Dake. The genre of this book is modern detective.

Chuck Restic is a normal office worker in Human Resources for a large corporation, when a man in his corporation disappears suddenly. Only Chuck’s bad emotional state (his very near divorce) and his free time, made him start looking in this case, where he discovers that this disappearance is just the surface for something much bigger than he could have imagined.

The settings are very real, it screams bureaucracy of corporate America. However, what was really realistic was the characters, they were very, logical, understandable, and cool (and I’m talking about a bunch of NORMAL BORING peoples) ….. Let me take a moment to explain how much I liked the style of the characters in this story (sorry about that, but I have to rant or I won’t be able to sleep tonight.)

So here we have the protagonist “Chuck” who is unlike most heores in detective stories. He isn’t a macho man with all the charm that makes each female sown to the ground. He isn’t a hero with skills in Karate or an expert marksman the likes of a Matrix character. He is a BORING OFFICE WORKER, and you know what that’s okay, he gets beaten up, and threatened, but doesn’t go back to avenge his manly pride, he feels vulnerable, sad, and motivated to help another human being, his only weapon is his knowledge of psychology and HR skills (which is awesome by the way).

The events here are told form Chuck’s narrative point, they are fast paced, but not so predictable as part of the plot, we can see the plot is logical, fun, and surprising.

The narration of Paul Dake was very good at moving along with the events, he showed the suitable voice for each scene, he really could deliver the emotional states and the thoughts of Chuck with ease. However, there were some moments I just laughed out loud, he really did a great job with the story.

Who wants a CM3 murder-fetish book?

In true Carlton Mellick form, here's another book that's wild, original, and entertaining as hell. The thing to remember about a guy with a decent fan base and forty-something books to his name is that each fan is going to take away something different from his body of work. You could argue which books are better than which and for what reasons, but really, after more than fifteen years publishing bizarro books, Carlton Mellick rarely disappoints. By now you know what you're getting into. Crazy ideas backed up with decent stories, which more often than not work together to make each story unique from all the others.

As She Stabbed Me Gently In the Face is a story about a serial killer who hides in plain sight as an artist whose exhibitions are deadly. They don't kill people, but they easily could. The serial killer is a sort of femme fatale character, a strong female protagonist (antihero?) who has a fetish for death. The narrative follows her killing habits as an immortal being sacrifices himself so that she can kill him over and over again without the need to properly kill innocent young men. This storyline is framed around a journalist who tracked her down in order to report her story. With the usual twists and turns and unimaginable plot developments you come to expect from a Carlton Mellick story, As She Stabbed Me is a story about death and lust, about people having the desire to save other people, about love and sacrifice, and the visceral horror that comes with the territory of being a serial killer.

There's plenty of weird horror in this one for fans of Clusterf**k, but with a sinister overtone that's sort of American Psycho-ish, and with the whole murder-fetish thing hanging over it.

KOKA FRUIT KILLS!!!! JUST SAY NO!!!

I was unsure about this book at first, mostly because CMIII seemed unsure about it in his intro. However, now that I've read it, I have to say this is my new favorite CMIII book. I can see it's gotten some pretty negative reviews (and I do go a little heavy handed with the 5 star ratings sometimes, but I love most books I read, just in different ways), and I'm finding that odd. I really feel like this is one of his strongest works to date. I LOVED the way Oksana told her story within the book. I've always been a fan of the ole 'story within a story' device. So the set-up was different than anything he's done for a long time, and I enjoyed the change of pace.

The narrative itself was amazing. Maybe I'm morbid; I don't know. But I absolutely enjoyed CMIII's foray into true horror. Although it's not horror exactly. It's hard to explain! Clusterf*ck and Apesh*t were funny horror stories...this one isn't funny at all, but it's a detailed glimpse into the mind of a killer, and I love books with that theme. The dynamic between Oksana and Edward is fun, and I love the little twist ending (yes, there's a surprise!).

But let's be honest...if you're a huge CMIII fan, you're going to read and enjoy this book one way or another. If you HAVEN'T read CMIII, I would consider this a good starter book, although it ISN'T typical of his other writing, so if you don't like it, keep trying more of his books...one of the 45 or so he's written will be bound to please you!

Bizarro King Takes On Horror

Oksana Maslovskiy is an artist, a model, and a gorgeous woman. But this woman has a dark side to her, behind all the glitz and glamor she holds dear. She is a serial killer, and is very good at it. She preys on unsuspecting young men, taking them away from society only to cut open their chests to peer at what lays inside. Then one night Oksana meets a young man by the name of Gabriel, and her life changes. You see, Gabriel came back to life after she viciously murdered him. Oksana freaks out, she can't believe her eyes. Then Gabriel tells her the truth, that he is an angel, sent to help her. He offers her a deal, that she can kill him as much as she wants, so long as she doesn't kill anyone else. But what happens when the victim starts enjoying the killing? How far is too far for Oksana, and what could be the breaking point of poor Gabriel?

Carlton Mellick III, grandmaster of the bizarro genre, comes at us with his latest release like, well, a knife to the face. This tale of brutal slayings mixed with horrific sexual encounters puts Carlton right up there with horrors best in this realm. I was quite surprised to realize how brutal Carlton was going to make this journey, and I regret nothing about going along for the ride. I would highly recommend this new novella to the horror genre, as it takes us away from his usual bizarro fare that some in the horror field aren't huge on, and plants you firmly in the arms of a horror tale. I'm going to give this one a B+, and think you should give it a chance, even if his name isn't on your shelf yet.

A Great Take on the Classic Monster

THE CURSE OF THE MUMMY (The Cursed Book 1), by Maynard Sims​ (the pen-name of the Len Maynard-Mick Sims duo) is a great novelette, novella, long short story or whatever you want to call a story that's about 55 pages long. It is a classically structured horror story, set very vividly in London shortly after the Second World War. Mummy stories are a tough thing to pull off, and are rare for the same reason, but the authors strike a perfect balance here between Egyptian lore and modern day obsessions that makes the tale work so well. The characters are remarkable for their depth and reality in a work so economically worded. Maynard and Sims have never missed with me, and they were the reason I picked this book up, but it's also the first in a series of novelettes, by different authors, about classic monsters. The second book is available now, THE CURSE OF THE WOLF, by Paul Kane. I'll be checking that one out soon.
