This book is obviously a love letter to those of us who gamed
By Murph
Disclaimer: I am an old gamer from the late 1970's. This book detailed all those games that I played, and many I never got around to playing. My group and I traveled from D&D, through Chivalry and Sorcery to RuneQuest, Traveller, and Space Opera. This book is obviously a love letter to those of us who gamed, had fun, watched our GPA's drop, met friends who are still friends, and expanded our imaginations. I still have many of my old books which my daughters think are "cool", even though Dad is not :). I literally could not put this book down, and appreciate it details a very overlooked member of the gaming world Dave Hargrave and his Arduin Grimoires. I can't recommend this book highly enough, I wish I could give it six stars. Back in the days of college, I remember vividly driving regularly to the gaming store, and counting out my hard saved coins for the latest Judges Guild City State installment, or the latest Traveller book. I remember subscribing to The Journal of the Traveller's Aid Society, and Different Worlds (I still have them), and looking forward to each installment (again to the detriment of my GPA). Going through the racks of gaming material and finding The City State of the Invinvible Overlord and using it as a city for adventure for almost two decades. This book has just the right amount of information, without being overly detail oriented.

Required reading for role players.
By Commander Awesome
Every role player should have this book on their bookshelf. This is especially true if you're a fan of Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, or Dungeons & Dragons. The first hundred pages are devoted to a nicely detailed history of TSR and the impact it had on the industry. Then the author adds on with the histories of other important gaming companies that helped to launch the hobby.

Designers & Dragons is a great value for the price and the information it contains is compelling. Much of what is in this book isn't common knowledge with most gamers, especially the younger ones. Older gamers might remember the news and rumors behind things like the late Mr. Gygax's departure from TSR, but there is so much more detail here than even the older gamers are likely to know. And then there is histories for Judge's Guild, Chaosium, and GDW. Much that information will likely be new to even the old timers.

If you want to know how the modern games came about, this is a fantastic place to start. The details chronicled here would take hundreds of hours to find on your own (and it probably wouldn't be anywhere near as organized or comprehensive). The book is a great historical compilation for a hobby that has influenced an incredible amount of modern media. Well-written and fast-paced, this book should sit next to any dedicated role player's collection. Pop culture fans and role players should all read this book. Seriously, read it now.

I can't wait to get into the next book
By Mr. J. M. Hicks 'Farsight Blogger'
I've only ever delved into the history of the tabletop roleplaying history a few times, and this was mainly snippets of information gleaned from books and interviews over the years. I’ve always been fascinated by the early days and the way the industry grew and continues to this day, and I’ve always enjoyed learning about the early days of the hobby. However, I’ve never really had the chance to really find out how it began and what happened to the individuals, games and companies involved.

Thank goodness, then, for Designers & Dragons: A History of the Roleplaying Game Industry.

This first volume of the series covers the 1970s, early days of the RPG scene and it's a glorious if depressing read - glorious in that it's amazing to see how these first firms kicked the whole thing off, their attitude and approach to the fledgling hobby and the almost off-handed way they handled new product. Depressing in that I wish I had been around to appreciate that initial burst of energy and passion.

After the hefty entry on the giant of the hobby, TSR, the book then covers Flying Buffalo, Games Workshop, GDW, Judges Guild, Metagaming Concepts, Fantasy Games Unlimited, Chaosium, Gamescience, Heritage Models, Grimoire Games, DayStar West Media and Midkemia Press. This is followed up by some neat little ‘Did you know?’ comments about the nature of roleplaying in the 1970s – which I found fascinating, as the attitude to gaming really has changed over the decades – and then a bibliography and acknowledgements.

There’s a real charm to this first book as it takes you back to the beginning and it’s not always a nice read; disagreements, rivalries and lawsuits rear their ugly heads as well as the stories of people reaching milestones, enjoying successes and pushing the hobby forward. It was great to read about the beginnings of the hobby but it was just as good to read about the approach that most companies had towards this new pastime. It almost comes across as clueless, sometimes, but the hobby was young and directionless and, coming out of the structured worlds of boardgames and wargames, many of the people involved had no true guidelines on how to approach this new and peculiar hobby.

It’s a solid read and while there may be moments when I felt that the book was simply listing facts and figures – which can’t be helped considering that it is trying to be complete and sometimes the detailed information just isn’t available – I honestly felt I learned something about my hobby and it’s origins. The book doesn’t take sides or root for any single person, game or company (although it does refer to some possible evidence or widely-regarded opinion on certain matters) and it gives the facts as cleanly, and as entertainingly, as possible.

As I mentioned earlier, there may have been times when I felt that the book was just calling out statistics or just reeling off product lines for a certain company’s production period, but even though I may have passed over these periods with a lot less interest than other points in the book, at no point did I feel completely bored or dissatisfied. These were fillers, information blurbs that took me through the workings of the company to make the history complete. All the time there’s cross-referencing and notes on what to read next, sidebars on details about certain things that readers might find interesting and notes that add flavour and background.

Well written, well laid out and, apart from the few rare moments where I felt I was reading material just to get to the juicier parts of the history (everyone loves a bit of gossip, don’t they?), I seriously enjoyed this book. I can't wait to get into the next book, the 1980s, which was my era, the decade when I entered the hobby.

Highly recommended.

First Told Tales, by Dan Boutwell

Since the dawning of time man has been scribbling his stories on walls and crude parchments, which have been rolled and tucked into crevices for future minds to discover and read. It seems we humans have a compulsion to share our stories with other people.

The author of First Told Tales, Dan C. Boutwell, lives in a small city in north Texas, with his wife of forty-seven years and a black Lab named Max. He spends his days refining short stories he has
written over the years and creating new works as novels. What was once a pastime has become a passion which has taken him into retirement from his professional municipal planning vocation of forty years.

This collection of tales is an assembly of the author’s short stories. Most of them sport a military flavor, which reflects his strong patriotic belief. They all speak to the common theme of valor, honor and courage which each person has secured within their hearts. Whether they take place on a battlefield of the Civil War, the freezing cold of the Battle of the Bulge, or the vast waters of the South Pacific during WWII, these tales will thrill you, warm you, and sometimes cause a tear to form. In the spirit of the talented American short story writer O’Henry, they are a breath of Americana, each with a gentle twist at the end,
which strives to leave you lifted up and in a good place.

You absolutely must chase this Alice down this rabbit hole!
By David Reed
I am grateful to Chance for the hours of diversion I spent watching Camera (who plays the part of a real, broken --seriously broken-- Alice) and the entire world around her unraveling at a breath-taking and accelerating pace. The initial dark matter premise intrigued me and was fun, despite being applied with a little bit of a heavy hand at times. Ultimately, the explanations and applications of the what-if science were nice window dressing, but could've been any civilization-ending vector without damaging a very cool story. I'm glad it wasn't zombies that are slowly eating the world thus time. Cosmologically-speaking, Chance's "reality" is way more frighteningly plausible.

Chance has a gift for creating quirky characters beginning with your new favorite not-a-hero, Camera, and including every other crazy, weird, memorable person in the story. Meeting these people alone is worth the price of admission. I am grateful for the chance to meet them. Virtually. I never want to meet any of them in person. Ever.

I am grateful that Chance ended on a Terminator-inspired cliff-hanger, because that means she has to write the next book really soon!

I am also grateful that I do NOT have to live in the world Chance imagined.

Interesting and well written
By BondiBookgirl
Well, it has finally happened: I have read a vampire novel, albeit inadvertently. Somehow, I missed that aspect of the description.
Dark Matter Tiding is not actually a vampire novel. I'm not sure what it is. It starts out in a terrific manner, setting up what looks like a thriller involving unethical corporations, killer drones, murky governments and growing insanity due to the rise of dark matter in the universe.
The next thing you know, we're in Texas, looking for the oddly named heroine's brother as the heroine struggles to hold the family ranch together. (Yes, the odd name is explained, but I spent the first quarter of the book distracted by the main character's name, and its eventual explanation did not add anything material.) Meanwhile, back at the ranch, cue a whole new cast of characters (and the aforementioned zombies, or zombie wannabes), with token references to the dark matter crisis. The final showdown between good guys and bad guys is well set up, with a build-up of anticipation and tension, but it's over quickly and then the book just ends.
Overall, I liked Dark Matter Tiding: it's a generally well written book with some intriguing ideas and well crafted, believable characters. However, I was disappointed and dissatisfied with a few aspects.
The shift in plot focus from thriller to homestead was disorienting, and I kept waiting for the two to entwine and lead to a dramatic conclusion. Camera's lack of remorse about her actions in Washington did not make me warm to her, and it seemed to conflict with her lack of resolve in using the same weapon against the people threatening her home and family. There is no resolution of the dark matter crisis; for a substance that is apparently so important it warrants a title built around it, dark matter itself has a surprisingly low profile in this novel.
(note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal review)

Deep and imaginative
By OneOfTheBrontes
Camera Hence is the Chief Engineer for a company who builds and operates military-style drones. While watching a live video feed from a pipeline in a desert, she witnesses these drones being used to kill innocent people. As Earth is being bombarded by dark matter, which causes psychosis in many people, Chance finds she has the opportunity to make a statement against the company she works for in a grand but near-suicidal act. She flees to the family ranch where she finds there are more battles to be fought.
Dark Matter Tiding is a well-written novel with an imaginative plot. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue is good.
I thought the first chapter was the best of the whole book. I could see the events of the party unfolding, could see Camera raising her arms to call the drones. It was masterful writing.
Most of the characters in this novel are strong, maybe too strong. Kikko was too horrid and had no redeeming qualities. I found it implausible that her two boyfriends not only remained constant in her life, but also continued to support her crazy schemes.
I liked the fact that the members of the colony of vampires were suffering delusions. They were not immortal bloodsuckers. This came as a relief to me—I am so over vampire stories. I liked the ironic twist this gave to the overall story.
I thought the name Camera was nonsensical but changed my mind when the origin of the name was revealed. Well done, Ms Maree.
I cannot say that I was rooting for the heroine throughout the book--I couldn’t quite get a handle on her character and felt remote from her.
Overall, this is an interesting and well-written novel with an enjoyable, unpredictable plot.
I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest and non-reciprocal review.

Son of the White Wolf, by Robert E. Howard

This early work by Robert E. Howard was originally published in 1936 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Son of the White Wolf' is a story in the El Borak series about a Texan gunman in early 20th Century Afghanistan. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard – a bookish and somewhat introverted child – was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece – a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' – for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ANOTHER LITTLE KNOWN HOWARD CHARACTER
By Tim Janson
The White Wolf, AKA Francis Xavier Gordon was one of Howard's lesser known characters. Not a fantasy character in the vein of Conan, Kull, or Bran Mak Morn, Gordon was one of Howard's Historical adventure heroes.
Historical adventure was one of Howards favorite genres and he created stories clearly influenced by writers such as Burroughs, Mundy, and others.
Gordon was an American adventurer who stars in several short stories taking place primarily in the middle east. Arabs were one of Howard's favorite villians, even in Conan stories where Egypt becomes Stygia.
Gordon is a hard-punching, quick-shooting character, similar I would Say to the Brendan Fraser Character in the Mummy movies. the stories take place roughly circa the 20's and 30's when these lands were still roughly untamed.
They're quick, action packed tales. If all you know about Howard is Conan, you'd do well to tray and dig up this and other books of his lesser known creations. Good stuff.

Above Average Tales of a Lesser Known Howard Character
By James Sadler
This book contains three Robert E. Howard tales: "Blood of the Gods," "The Country of the Knife," and "Son of the White Wolf." The latter two were published in 1936 following Howard's death. They are essentially desert epics featuring the character of Francis X. Gordon, an American who was known as El Borak. El Borak adventured about Kurdistan, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
The stories appear to take place fairly contemporaneously with Howard's life, even though El Borak frequently swings a pretty mean sword. Still, he also managed to carry a gun much of the time. The stories are fast paced and filled with action, typical REH work. Of course, what's typical for REH would be above average for most other writers. REH was truly the king of the pulps and produced an unbelievable amount of work in a relatively short time.
for anyone who follows REH, this is a must have. "The Country of the Knife," in particular, is a great story. Roy Thomas liked it well enough to adapt it into a Conan story.

MEDIOCRITY IN THE MIDDLE-EAST
By EMAN NEP
SON OF THE WHITE WOLF contains three stories about El Borak -- an American adventuring in the Middle-East. In general, the plotlines are pretty good, but the atmosphere and character development themselves are lacking. Perhaps with some work these could have been first-rate stories, but as they stand, here is my story-by-story lowdown: [NO SPOILERS]

BLOOD OF THE GODS takes place in Arabia, where El Borak and an enemy party are racing to reach a wizened hermit that lives in a series of caves cut into a mountain. The hermit is part of a good plot twist, but the ending of the story was rather throwaway (in a literal sense, too).

THE COUNTRY OF THE KNIFE, like the previous story, starts from the POV of someone other than El Borak. In this case the story starts in America (San Francisco, I believe) and then moves to India (implied) and starts to get more interesting once the starting character reaches Afghanistan. The scene with the auction was the highlight for me. At about 80 pages this is the longest story in this collection, but I also felt it was the least rewarding.

SON OF THE WHITE WOLF is short but sweet--my favorite of the three. Unlike the previous two stories, this one is grounded in more history, even hinting that El Borak rode with Lawrence of Arabia. Most of the story takes place in Turkish-occupied territory, but more specifically modern-day Jordan based on the "mountains of Edom" reference. The plot deals mostly with El Borak and a German spy who are caught between warring Turkish and Arab factions.

Overall, I found that all of these stories were worth reading once, but I wouldn't be interested in rereading them. The main reason for this is that Howard doesn't do a very good job of making the reader feel like they are actually in the Middle-East. Scenic descriptions are few and far between and the ones that can be found, usually resort to cliche's and other generic descriptions. On a positive note, Howard does insert a few Middle-Eastern phrases for a little bit of flavor.
As for the main character, El Borak doesn't come across as very unique, other than the fact that he is an American in the Middle-East and usually has a nice rifle or pistol at hand to compliment his sword. There are occasional hints at his past in the States and Howard often tries to draw parallels between the Southwest and the Middle-East. Having grown up in Arizona and having been to the Middle-East many times myself, the two are not very similar at all. The empty deserts of Iraq are far different than the cactus-infested deserts outside of Tucson, Arizona.
