About the Author
Robert Louis Stevenson (eigentlich Robert Levis Balfour Stevenson) wurde am 13.11.1850 in Edinburgh geboren. Der Vater war Leuchtturmbaumeister, das wollte auch der Sohn werden. Er arbeitete jedoch nicht als Rechtsanwalt sondern wurde freier Schriftsteller, vergeblich ein Klima suchend, das sein Lungenleiden heilte. Seit 1888 lebte er auf Samoa, wo er bei den Eingeborenen in hohem Ansehen stand. Er starb am 03.12.1894 im Haus Vailima bei Apia (Westsamoa).

RLS at his Best

Somewhere over the past few years I acquired a copy of a wonderful collection of stories by the famed author Robert Louis Stevenson. The volume, New Arabian Nights, is a mere one-hundred-and-ten years old, and in very good condition. While I can't remember when or where I bought it (undoubtedly in a flea market somewhere), it resurfaced recently as I was unboxing the books that I had stored in Arizona while I was overseas - and I put it in a stack next to my bed.

The collection began with a bit of a sarcastic "note" which indicated that the author had been victimized by a plagiarist. He said:

"I must prefix a word of thanks to the gentleman who condescended to borrow the gist of one of my stories, and even to honor it with the addition of his signature. This mark of appreciation emboldened me to make the present collection."
Ouch!

Prior to tackling this interesting collection, my only experiences with Stevenson had been his classic tales for youth, Kidnapped and Treasure Island. The stories of New Arabian Nights were written for an older and more worldly audience. The author, ever the master storyteller, managed to showcase his humor, dramatic flare, and superior plotting abilities in the six stories of this collection. His subjects ranged from a young man who accidentally backed into a house late at night through a door that wasn't latched, only to find that once inside there was no way out - to chronicling the nocturnal adventures of a pair of entertainers (husband and wife) who were locked out of their Paris hotel for a night because they returned after it had been secured for the evening.

The best story in the collection is "The Suicide Club," a dark tale in which a European prince got himself entangled in a group of men who all had a desire to die. He assumed from what little he knew of the club, (he did not really want to die, and joined just to study the drama of the others), that he would be relatively safe. However, he learned at his first meeting that the club met each evening and the person who would die that night as well as the person who would do the killing were both determined through a game of chance. The prince, alas, was too proud to back out of his membership in the organization. Macabre complications ensued.

Stevenson's stories in this collection were all very original. Each of the six took place in or around London or Paris, with a couple set in the 1400's and the others in Stevenson's own era of the late 1800's. They examined the human condition through tales of greed, revenge, murder, and even love. All had twists and turns aplenty, and were as captivating as they were clever.

Robert Louis Stevenson was quite the prolific writer. I thoroughly enjoyed New Arabian Nights and will be on the lookout for more of his works. I predict he has a golden literary future!

A short, little gem...

This is a sweet short story about a man worn out from a life of running a business that was passed on to him and that he never cared to run. Finally breaking free from that heavy chain, he discovers afresh the beauty and goodness of life. Throughout the story he struggles with self-condemnatory thoughts, and it is only through being drawn out of himself to help the people around him that he rises above his low self-image and comes to experience the joy, beauty, and value of self-giving love.

I don't know anything of the background of this story or at which period of his writing career that Dickens wrote it, but it did not seem to have, I'm going to say, as "Dickensy" a flavor as his other works I've read. A Dickens fan, I think, would definitely still be able to pick out certain turns of phrase, themes, ideas, or literary ploys that are characteristic of Dickens, but on the whole, it seemed to be lacking something of the Dickens I am familiar with. Perhaps that is only because this is a short story, and it is the first of his short stories that I have read. Overall, it was an enjoyable short read and I definitely recommend it.

Little did we know at the time that there are some folks that have extremely poor eyesight and can’t even see our large print books!

Having poor eyesight all my life this bothered me so once again I went to the design team and challenged them to make the largest possible word search book they could and this is the result.

• There are 50 puzzles each having 20 words.
• The left page has the word clues in two columns and is the largest font possible for an 8.5 x 11 book!
• The right page has the puzzle which also fills the entire page.

The answers to the puzzles are all full-page and conveniently placed in the back and numbered to match the actual puzzles; Puzzle 1, Puzzle 2, etc.

I am confident that even those with the poorest eyesight will be able to work these extra large word search puzzles. Just do a “Look Inside” to see how large the clues and puzzles are and then order yours!

I have never known those great facts until I read this book.

This book consists of different facts about animals, the human body, different culture around the world, history and others. I learned a lot from reading this book. Allow me to paraphrase some of these facts that I have never known before.
When we sneeze, we should be thankful because the truth is that our heart stopped pumping for a millisecond. So just imagine if it doesn't restart?
We all love dogs, but if you are living in Iceland you will be put to jail because it is unlawful!
Twenty-seven percent of the food production in Western countries only went to the garbage bin, while on the other hand around 1.2 billion people around the world are underfed!
These are only few among the 250 amazing ideas that you've never known before. So don't hesitate to buy this book. I can guarantee that this will increase your wisdom.
P.S. By the way, there is something wrong with the numbering. The first and second digits are not showing. For instance, the number 25 is shown as "5". But this is not an issue for me, I know the publisher is doing his best to improve the formatting of this book.

Fasinating Facts

I was reading this while waiting at the DMV and it was so captivating it made my wait fly by incredibly fast. Before I knew it my wait turned into an hour of adventure and fascination. There was a huge wealth of knowledge in here that I didn't even have the slightest clue about. The variety of this compilation was interesting and the facts were incredibly intriguing. It gave me an arsenal of conversation starters to use at my disposal and in my opinion It was absolutely well worth the read and it's great book to read for anyone who wants to learn some neat things about many different subject. Highly recommended.

Ok, I have to admit it, I was already aware of a dozen of these facts... Man! So many actually Mind-blowing facts are given in this book, you need a very good memory to be able to remember all of them.. However, if you manage to stick a few in the backpocket of your brain, I guarrantee you will be a sensation at the next meeting/beer tasting session!! Just make your choice between one of the many categories: Culture, History, Science, Animals, Body, Objects... and prepare to ignite!

NOT FOR DUMMIES

This book is based on a well-known mathematical phenomenon known as the "Monty Hall effect" because it was first popularized by a television game show. National Geographic's "Brain Games" recently broadcast an episode featuring it. I was intrigued that the author included a modern, formal proof in a physics paper. I wish the author had titled the book "Not For Dummies" because there are too many people who think science and math are just matters of opinion. If something nature does makes no sense to them, then it must be wrong. Readers who can believe their eyes and want to learn enough about probability theory to be less at the whim of fickle fate should read this book. Especially they should play the card game in the book. They should play it as many times as necessary to see and believe how it turns out. Readers who can connect the dots will then see how The Monty Hall Effect can give people an edge in many circumstances, as per the examples in the book. I wish the author had included more such examples but one shouldn't be too ambitious in popularizing science given the sad state of science education.

Nothing could be more useful than knowing how to make the right decisions. Most of us seem to anguish over decision making. Thank goodness there's a book with a solid method for helping people figure out how to make tough decisions a lot less difficult. I found this book to provide excellent, practical tools that can be used for decision making. It's an easy read, and well worth the $3.99 e-book price.

I love this type of Trivia

I love this type of Trivia. I was happy to have found this book with all of the shows I loved to watch. Multiple choice, I thought I would have aced it, but they’re tough questions! I didn’t do as well as I figured and I didn’t even attempt the HARDCORE! Not yet! It’s very entertaining and brought up situations I’d completely forgotten about in my favorite series. If you like Trivia and loved these shows, you can’t miss this book! Highly recommend!!!

Not terrible, but not terribly satisfying, either.

This book is alright. Not very good, but not very bad. The quality of writing in the stories runs the full range of "I wish the annoying author would get out of the way and let the story tell itself" to "damn, that was some fine storytelling". The biggest problem is that many of the stories are too short to be satisfying. Even the better tales in this collection end just as you are starting to get into them. I get that this is a short story collection, but many of the stories feel more like snippets.

Still, I applaud all of the authors (even the ones I didn't like) for their contributions. I will recommend this book on this basis: given the very low price, if you are a fan of dark stories and campfire stories, and you have nothing else in particular to read at the moment, go ahead and grab this. Despite not being entirely satisfying, the stories are a reasonably good way to pass a few minutes here and there.

Great Collection, Leaves a Little to be Desired

I finally got my paperback copy of Demonic Visions, and on the whole I would definitely recommend it to any and all fans of horror (or short fiction, for that matter). The sheer variety of stories means that even the most picky of palates will be satisfied. Demons, zombies, alternate dimensions, serial killers, evil spirits, creepy-crawlies, and the just plain weird - it's all here. I'm not familiar with a lot of the names in here, but all signs to them having bright careers ahead of them should they continue (myself not withstanding)! I enjoy anthologies because you can sit, read for awhile, have closure in the story, and still have more to come back to!

The only minor nitpick I have is similar to other reviewers', some of these stories are just too short. I understand the concept of flash fiction, but some of the pieces stop just as the story actually starts. A few of the tales also fall victim to some pretty generic cliches, but that comes with the territory.

I would tell you which tales were my favorite, but you should really just read them all and decide for yourself! I am honored to be a part of this and excited to see what horrors Volume II yields.

Twisted Tales of Darkness

I originally purchased this book because I knew one of the authors and felt compelled to support him. After reading his entry I was intrigued and gravitated towards the other stories. There were some good authors, and there were some great authors. Like mentioned in another review, some of the stories just felt like they were too short. It would be great writing and storytelling, then it would all be gone, sometimes at the climax.

I will keep an eye out for a handful of the authors, and hopefully see at least a novella out of one of them.

Definitely worth the money and time!

I really enjoyed this book...I even learned a thing or two! It was funny, compassionate and honest. Reading this was like having a corner seat in the shop, watching all the fun!

About the Author
Kevin Morris has written for The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Filmmaker Magazine. He is the Co-producer of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, "The Book of Mormon, " and producer of the classic documentary film, "Hands on a Hardbody." He lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles. This is his first collection of fiction.

A Wonderful Collection of Stories You Won't Soon Forget

There are 9 stories in this deeply absorbing book that captures the everyday dramas, big and small, of an Everyman struggling to figure out the meaning of life.  From a teenager besotted by a girl who's out of his league, to a young man suffering through his first job, to a middle-aged divorced father who hasn't grown up, to an old man helplessly watching his wife slip into dementia, these stories are all gems that are by turns funny, thought-provoking, entertaining, heartfelt and sparkling.

A superb collection of heartfelt empathetic narratives. Go read White Man's Problems!

It's not often when you find a new collection of short stories that is entertaining, heartfelt, and works as a coherent overall narrative. Though the "white men" in Morris's collection come from all walks of life and range in age from pre-teen to post-retirement, there's a consistent through-line of empathy and wonder.

In the book's eponymous highlight, a recently divorced dad goes on a school trip with his son. He's not a good guy and even making the trip happens for all the wrong reasons. This is the kind of guy who gets himself a separate hotel room from his son and takes a separate flight from the kids just so he can fly first class. Nevertheless, the character is immensely relatable and real. You reluctantly root for him not to get caught in his indiscretions. And you feel a little guilty for the vicarious empathy you inherit from Morris.

A very different, outstanding story, "Rain Comes Down" features an older man going to a classical music performance with his daughter and Alzheimer-affected wife. Morris is able to call out the little joys within the otherwise drab-sounding world the protagonist occupies. He does so with the softness and precision of a Jhumpa Lahiri, except, of course, his subject is very much a white man.

A final story I will highlight is "Mulligan's Travels." Filled with the empathetic narrative of the other tales, this one revolved around a single potentially fateful event that can take a flawed white upper-middle-class dad and make him into a very hated character. The seemingly mundane becomes thrilling as you root for a guy in whose shoes the reader can easily place him or herself.

Highly highly recommend. You will not regret this one.

Excellent Collection

A highly enjoyable collection of stories, full of depth and texture. Morris has a smart and unique voice, and his focused observations are entertaining and thought provoking. A wonderful read.
