A very well paced and dramatic narrative--loses focus somewhat with too many sub plots/ antagonists.

This book is the mirror image, if you will, of Amish Tripathi's Shiva Trilogy. While Amish had a good concept, all his books suffered from a distractingly bad writing style, shoddy editing and meandering plot--weaknesses which were papered over by some artfully intelligent (dare I say cunningly smart) publicity.

The reason I say "The Guardians of the Halahala" is a mirror image is, that the weaknesses in Amish's books are almost completely avoided. The book has a plot that is masterfully narrated, characters are compelling and several sequences are so filled with dramatic tension, you can't put down the book. On the other hand, the issue with the book is in terms of the concept, which could have been thought through some more. On the face of it, its a marvelous premise--that some Halahala was secreted away at the time of the Samudra Manthan, and now threatens Cosmic equilibrium. This in itself, should have been the main plotline of the book--where the righteous and valorous King Vikramaditya is entrusted with the Halahala by none other than Lord Shiva himself, and the subsequent efforts he needs to take to safeguard it against the covetousness of the Devas and the Asuras.

But the book gets into way too many sub plots, and makes Vikramaditya face too many antagonists. You get reminded of the "Spiderman 3" movie, where Spiderman had to battle Sandman, Venom and Green Goblin Junior!! Here, King Vikramaditya has to not only safeguard the Halahala against divine, cosmic forces, he also needs to guard India's western & North western frontiers against marauding Hunas and Shakas, and as if that wasn't enough, has to deal with perfidious actions by a supposed ally, Magadha, to the east. With all due respect to the author, probably any 2 of these sub plots would have been enough for the book. The Magadhan angle could easily have been explored in a subsequent book--after all, this is a series--what was the need to crowd so many elements into one novel?

Besides, the author needs to brush up on Indian mythology. "Asura" and "Rakshasa" are terms denoting two different mythical beings. Like the Devas, these two branches also share the same father but are born of different mothers. So it gets irritating after a point, when the author keeps switching back and forth between the two.

That said, this is a very well paced narrative, well imagined, and certainly, one would want to read the next part of series.

The experience of getting lost in history was extraordinary. I love the way author provided the ancient Indian map and casting, which help to relate even easily. I would like to give the author 5 star for selection of words, also for using authentic words from Sanskrit or other Indigenous languages.
But unfortunately the experience with Amazon/Tabletopart was NOT good, as seems they are selling the incomplete book with total number of pages 410. Although any other site the total number of pages for this book is 428.

this would be a perfect children's book

Almost perfectly written, concise and biting satire. The author hammers down the humor as relentlessly as flash fiction allows. The first two or three stories are a little slow and rough, but just barely. Once the ball gets rolling down the rabbit hole (or ball pit) the humor and insight become incisive and flourish together. There's a twinge of Roald Dahl in the text, something I appreciate as huge fan of his. If not for the mild blue language in just one of the shorts, this would be a perfect children's book.

It's Not What I Thought

I initially passed on “Happy Clown Burger” cover, thinking it would be about a demented psychotic clown. When I opened the preview, I thought it was going to be crude adolescent behavior.

What I found was a delightful parody, reminiscent of Garrison Keillor’s “Lake Wobegon,” revolving around the Happy Clown fast food hamburger franchise, displayed through its employees and customers. Each sub-story presenting a different facet of life, embellishing playfully on the quirks in human nature. Most of these vignettes had me smiling. The “Costume Contest” had me laughing out loud.

This is the kind of book, I like to savor. I’m not the kind of person who watches a comedy marathon. I enjoyed it and found the cover is appropriate.

I laughed at every story. Having worked in the fast food industry before, I can see EVERY one of these shorts happening. But I can't decide which is my favorite. I think I have to go with the costume party, though Mrs. Rhonda Wiggleroom is up there. Easily 5 stars, a wonderfully funny book. I eagerly await the next volume! *I picked this up on a free giveaway*

Mastering Chess is a unique book in that it covers the essentials which every aspiring chess player must know well (from Novice to Expert) to reach
the chess Master level. The first edition was popular for some 20 years (from 1985 - 2005) while in print with four different publishers (including Pergamon/Oxford, Cadogan and Everyman/London, Dover / Mineola, NY).

Each Chapter of this new edition has new material added and the book has essentially doubled in size.
Each Chapter includes new Exercise positions with solutions. Besides being a self-study self help book, it was designed for chess teachers and chess courses.

First there is a spritely written 1st Chapter on Tactics and Combinations by Geoff Chandler of Edinburgh Scotland. Mr. Chandler has updated his popular work with observations of play and missed opportunities from Internet play. The 2nd Chapter introduces a new author (Life Master Ian Harris) and a new approach to how openings can be learned. It presents Dr. Kopec's idea that openings can be learned from the perspective of the following
five goals: 1) Development 2) Center Control 3) King Safety 4) Space and 5) Material Balance. Dr. Kopec has been expousing this idea for a number of years in his lectures and chess camps. If effective, it is a novel way of teaching a subject that entails volumes and volumes of books over a number of centuries! Mr. Harris has developed this Chapter spanning some 50 pages in conjunction with Dr. Kopec.

Dr. Kopec has added new material to his Chapter 3:
How To Analyze a Position including lessons on the
topics: The Point Count Method, Grand Central Station, and Don't Believe Everything Your Computer Tells You. New exercises have also been added at the end of this Chapter.

Chapter 4 (by Chris Morrison) has also been extended with an additional lesson entitled "Good and Bad Pieces" and number of additional exercises.

Chapter 5 (by the late Ian Mullen) has been extended with a lesson entitled "More Advanced Endings". This Chapter has always proven very useful for teachers and courses on the endgame. The material is suitable for players from Novice to Master! There are also additional exercises for this

About the Author
Daniel Kopec (1954-2016) was an American chess International Master, author, and computer science professor at Brooklyn College. He graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1975. Kopec later received a PhD in Machine Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. With Ivan Bratko he was the creator of the Bratko-Kopec Test, which was one of the de facto standard testing systems for chess playing computer programs in the 1980s. Kopec was one of the most talented home-bred players in the US. Dr. Kopec was New York High School Champion at 14, National Master at 17, Scottish Champion in 1980, 2nd-equal in the Canadian Closed in 1984, and International Master in 1985. He was an active player, journalist, writer, chess educator and scholar. His competitive results with top-flight chess professionals were remarkable. He delivered many chess courses, lectures, published seven highly recognized chess books, and developed eight highly regarded instructional videos (18.5 hours). Over the past 16 years Kopec’s Chess Camp, had become world renowned. In parallel with his chess career, Dr. Kopec had pursued an academic career in computer science with research in artificial intelligence, software methodology, and computer science education. For more than 20 years Kopec tested and evaluated hundreds of human and machine chess players in the UK, Canada, and US in order to quantify their overall chess strength, their specific deficiencies and definite abilities. In bridging his chess and academic interests, Kopec developed a reputation as perhaps the world’s greatest exponent of chess knowledge.

An Outstanding Chess Course!

MASTERING CHESS, by IM Danny Kopec et al., is indeed in its second edition, but it is also in the fourth printing thereof. As of this writing, I actually possess both the latest rendition and the earlier second printing. I am delighted to report that some of issues identified with the earlier release/releases have indeed been addressed, beginning with the “dot matrix font” to which “Voltron” alluded in his earlier review below. Moreover, the book has also been expanded somewhat to 288 pages.

Of course, a single volume cannot possibly teach everything one needs to know about chess, yet Kopec and his colleagues do an admirable job presenting so much vital material – tactics, strategy, and even specific theoretical principles for openings and endgames. The material is presented clearly, with precise explanatory comments and excellent illustrations from either contrived positions or specific games. Moreover, the authors provide a set of exercises at the end of each chapter, including four new tests added for the second edition. The problems cover a vast range in difficulty, from tactics I could solve at a glance to various positions that perhaps even grandmasters may not have understood as well as they should have. [Having flubbed one set miserably, I shall obviously need to study to those chapters more carefully!]

While I find the entire work most valuable, I must call specific attention to Lessons 17-21 of Chapter 4, which address the problem of “How To Formulate A Plan.” So many club players reach tolerably good positions but suddenly come to the realization they don’t have any idea how to proceed. I heartily recommend this section to those who have ever stared at the board and felt utterly “clueless”!

All told, I am completely satisfied with this latest printing of the second edition. Problems with the print or font have been addressed, and the material is absolutely excellent. IM Kopec is perhaps too modest in his “Introduction,” in which he suggests the work is “geared toward the club player (1450-1750). I would extend that rating strength through Class A (1999 USCF rating). I truly wish I had had such a text 50-odd years ago!

Good for begginers or someone new to the game.

This reminds me of the book idiots guide to chess, but in a lecture format that covers a bit more topics. This book is probably best suited for Chess coaches who teach at yhe scholastic level and want a guide. .or a self learner who is learning about chess for the first time, It will cover all essential knowldge begginers should know, like basic tactics, combinations, pawn structures, development. The chapter has excercises at the end and also has move by move discussion of a game. My only real issue with the book is the font. The book I have is 2013 version but it uses a dot matrix font which makes its harders on the eyes, so i deducted a star for quality of the print. Overall nice book for begginers, and chess instructors looking for a guide. Stronger players may not like this book. I have attached a picture of the font used in the book.

About the Author
Becky Lawson was born Rebecca Suzanne Waddell in Macomb, Illinois, back when Gunsmoke was black and white. A corn-fed country girl born and bred, Becky grew up on a farm in Central Illinois, doing the usual farm things. Riding horses and swimming in the creek are two of her favorite memories. The third is of slipping from the house on a rainy day, hiding in the barn with a book, and reading until it was too dark to see. It was during one of those days that she decided maybe she could write a story. That she should write a story. Or even maybe a book. Larry Jenkins claims he is the “boringest” person on earth. Before retiring, he worked in the same profession for 45 years, and has been married to the same woman for 43 years. He lives in the same house he built 30 years ago, resides in the same town he was born in, Decatur, Illinois. This is the town that claims the invention of the fly swatter, paint by numbers, and the hog ringer. He may consider himself boring, but from his brain, which he claims is half a bubble off plumb, comes characters that are anything but boring.

Laugh-out-loud funny!

Opposing Farces is a fun comic mystery that keeps the twists coming.

Engaging, relatable characters pulled this reader into a caper that kept me guessing...and laughing...to the very end. It's a great read, reminiscent of and sure to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich and Jennifer Crusie. Just as perfect for a day of sitting in front of the fire as for a day of lying on the beach. Five stars! --Nick

A Fun Read

This book was fun to read. I really loved the characters and the story was offbeat and quirky. I read Opposing Farces twice and enjoyed just as much the second time around. I hope the authors write another book with these characters.

Like the Three Stooges on a Roller Coaster

Opposing Farces is a wild, irreverent romp from assault by potato cannon to organized crime to hired assassins—kind of like the Three Stooges on a roller coaster for mature audiences.

But it’s also a story of reuniting families and finding true love through a plot with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are involving and unforgettable, whether an aging and profane crime boss in a nursing home or a naïve young man pining for his floozy ex-wife—a cross-dressing female assassin hunting for her real father or a lady carpenter trying to meet a nice guy.

I recommend this book for those who like slapstick comedy and don’t mind adult language and situations.

Dave D’Alessio Dave D’Alessio is an ex-industrial chemist, ex-TV engineer, and ex-award-winning animator now masquerading as a working social scientist. C. Scott Davis C. Scott Davis is a writer (or likes to think of himself as one), a computer programmer, game designer, humorist (of dubious quality), composer (even more dubious) and singer/songwriter (beyond the valley of the shadow of the dubious). He is generally interested in almost everything. You might say he's a Jack of All Trades, except he doesn't really rate a Jack... He's more like the 8 of Diamonds of All Trades perhaps. An Anthology of Fantasy Short Stories is a fun and quick read

A Convergence of Worlds: An Anthology of Fantasy Short Stories is a fun and quick read. It contains four short stories, each by a different author, which fit snugly in the fantasy genre. Each story occupies a slightly different niche within the fantasy genre—some being more fairytale and others being a bit more high-fantasy or dark fantasy. Similarly, each story has a very different tone and feel from its book-mates. The variety keeps the anthology feeling fresh and leaves each story memorable in its own way.

However, a rather large issue in the stories’ variance is their formatting. In the version I read (.mobi file obtained from Smashwords), the stories are not formatted in the same font size or style, which can make reading them difficult. Likewise, there are no paragraph indentations (nor blank lines between paragraphs) to provide any distinction between paragraphs, which also makes reading a challenge. On a brighter note, I found the cover gorgeous.

Story One: “An Evening with Luke and His Fairy Godmother”

This story begins from a unique perspective—Luke visiting his mother, a reporter, as she interviews a mermaid. The newsroom setting provides an overview of the various magical creatures in the story’s world as well as gives the reader a sense of time and place. However, after the newsroom scene, the story begins to jump around unexpectedly. Luke’s fairy godmother shows up out of thin air (admittedly, as fairy godmothers tend to do), and they go on an adventure.

Unfortunately, the adventure is glossed over and Luke and his fairy godmother flit from scene to scene with far too many details crammed into a small amount of text for the reader to fully comprehend what is happening. The story would really benefit from being fleshed out into a longer piece with more space for explanation and less summary. The characters speed through the story, and a definable plot line is established toward the end.

The conclusion of the story is sweet and satisfying. It puts a new spin on a fantasy figure from childhood. I wish the story would have expanded more on this character and his transformation, because that part is truly imaginative and worth exploring. Overall, “An Evening with Luke and His Fairy Godmother” is fun with a gem of an ending, but the reader definitely must pay close attention to keep up with the pacing.

Story Two: “The Last Campfire”

Of the stories, this one was the darkest. It is set in a fictional world and describes soldiers on a night before battle. The story unfolds at a steady pace, providing the reader with information about the setting and characters on an as-needed basis. It is difficult to comment on the plot without revealing spoilers, so I will simply say that the story is mythological, mysterious, and compelling. It keeps the reader guessing until the end, at which time the reveal is satisfying and creative. This story is the most well-written and complete of the four.

Story Three: “What Happens at the Ball Stays at the Ball”

This story is by far the funniest of the group. In essence, it is a gender-bender of Cinderella, where a male peasant goes to a ball with the help of his fairy godfather and pursues a princess. The story is charming and a fresh take on an old fairy tale. The only aspect about the story that threw me for a loop was that the fairy godfather is a Greenbay fan. While I appreciate the Packers nod, the rest of the story seems to take place in a world that would not contain football, either because the sport would not exist at all or would not yet be invented. Beyond this minor detail, the story is a consistent, fun read that made me laugh out loud multiple times.

Story Four: “The Veil”

To be fair, I feel that I must say I felt a little out of my depth with this story. Of the four, it was the most “high-fantasy,” with creatures with which I am not at all familiar. However, much like the first story in the anthology, this story jumps around from scene to scene rather quickly. The plot of this story is clearer from the beginning, but the characteristics of the magical creatures and “rules” of the world, so-to-speak, are very unclear. Perhaps regular fantasy readers would be more familiar with Veils and Dryads, but I was not, and the story seemed to assume that the reader would not require much explanation.

From a writing standpoint, I had two main issues with this story. First, the gender pronouns used for the protagonist, Wren, kept alternating between male and female, which made it difficult to understand when she was acting or when another character was acting. Second, the dialogue felt a little flat, and like the narration, did not provide enough information for the reader to truly feel like a part of the story.

Overall, this story is definitely inventive, and I appreciated the darker tone and more serious themes it addressed. However, as with the first story in the anthology, I believe it should be expanded on to give the reader time to orientate him/herself in the world, get to know the characters, and pick up on the subtler nuances of the plot.

A Convergence of Worlds has earned a three star ranking from me, because I think it has a lot of potential. Each story is creative and unique, and they complement each other well as a collection. With a re-formatting of the text and a bit more clarity and “in-scene” writing from the first and last stories, I think this could be a truly strong collection that encompasses several of the lively sub-genres of fantasy.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Danielle Jamie! We all fell in love with Jordan and Brittan in Tempt My Heart and couldn't get enough. After reading this I am even more in love with them.

Danielle has a way of making you fall in love with all her characters. Of course I cried just hearing Canes name. I love that Danielle doesn't let us forget the love Brittan and Cane shared. It's also nice to see how understanding Jordan is about the love they shared.

Jordan will have you swooning and Brittan will have you laughing with her sassy mouth. Trust me when I say you will never look at Christmas lights the same again. Jordan will definitely have you wanting to play what's your favorite song with some of our favorite Christmas songs.

Perfect Holiday Novella

After reading Tempt My Heart I became infatuated with Jordon Valentine and I needed more. Yes, I said needed more it was a must and Danielle Jamie came to the rescue with Tempting Christmas.

Tempting Christmas is the story of their first Christmas together, and let me tell you Christmas has never been so hot. The sexual chemistry radiates from the pages and the sweetness will seep into your pores. Yet again I am left wanting more.

If you read Tempt My Heart, you know the story of Brittan and Jordon. If you haven’t read it, it is a must read. You technically could read this as a stand alone but trust me you want to know the whole story!

WOW!!!!! We all fell in love with Brittan and Jordan already, but to see Brittan come out of her shell and actually live & enjoy the holidays was so magical. I could see and feel everything that they were doing while Jordan shared his Christmas the way he always did every year and Brittan opening up and having so much fun. Loved the way Jordan made Caine apart of their Christmas, it was so heart felt and I actually cried with her. Danielle you "Rock", and I love reading your books!!!!!

Not just for parents

I honestly was not sure how much I would connect with this collection as someone who is not a parent, but I picked it up because of the great recommendations. Wow. I can honestly say that this is book for parents and children alike - so that means everyone. The stories are familiar in a way that is not cliche but rather warm and powerful. Reading these stories, whether they had a direct correlation to my upbringing or not, I still felt that essential sense of the amazing bond between parents and children. I can't wait to give this to both of my parents!!

Evocative and memorable stories about the parent-child relationship

There's a surprising lack of short fiction out there directly addressing the blindingly disorienting experience of new parenthood. This book takes that on, unblinkingly and compassionately. It's also very funny. At the heart of the book are a set of connected stories following one single mother adjusting to her new reality as the parent of an infant, but there are many other great characters and relationships here, lending us memorable glimpses into the pain and bewildering joy of the parent-child relationship. Ebenbach's writing style is deft and mature, quietly inviting us into these families' lives.

Heartwarming and Expertly Written Collection

The characters in David Ebenbach's collection of short stories range from those contemplating bringing a child into their lives to those with teenagers. It gives voice to the complex feelings that parents have and are sometimes afraid to discuss with others. The journey of parenthood is rocky and wonderful and Ebenbach writes with empathy and precision about this journey. It is a must read for parents and non parents alike; you will see yourself in the children and in the adults in these stories and you will laugh and cry!
