Space Captain Smith #5 (with #6 on the way)

One simply has to love a writer who knows exactly what buttons to push with his readers. Just a few days before reading this I had been having a quiet mental snigger about the name of a certain French intellectual, and blow me down, halfway through the book Mr Frost pulls out a Balzac joke.
After that, I'd have forgiven him pretty much anything. Luckily, I didn’t have to: End of Empires is the story of the clash of the British Space Empire with the Bloodthirsty Lemming-men of Yull. Its also sort of based on Heart of Darkness and/or Apocalypse Now (which was in turn, of course, based on Heart of Darkness). Also, there seems to be a bit of My Little Pony going on, but I don’t want to think about that too much.

Our hero is once again Smith, ably abetted by Surok the Slayer and his M'lak kin. We also see a fair bit of Wainscott, nudist special operations expert, with the usual cast of characters (Polly, Rhianna, Gerald) also all having a gig. Gerald even gets a few moments onscreen, after being terribly underutilised in the past books (although, its pretty hard to find plot points for a hamster when its not of the "miniature giant space" variety). Throw in some dinosaurs and the battle of Ravnaphant is in full swing.

Even better, volume 6, Pincers of Death, is apparently on the way later this year.

Mind you, this isn't the place to start reading Smith: Space Captain Smith is volume 1, and they all get better from there.

I was first introduced to the book in the HBO series "Pacific" as being carried by a beloved commander who was killed. One of life’s ironies. I love Ernest Hemingway's writing style and the history of war, so I was very happy with this book. I especially like the amount of research put into historical data I gleaned from this book. I wish I would have known about it when I was in school for a report or review. E. This Best is the Best

Hemingway's introduction states: "This book has been edited in order that...boys, as they grow to the age where they can appreciate it and use it and will need it, can have [a] book that will contain truth about war as near as we can come by it." As a result of careful selection and organization, this collection of war stories accomplishes what Hemingway set out to do. As a teacher, I've found these stories useful in class -- from Caesar's notes on his invasion of Britain and Charlotte Yonge's "Pass to Thermopylae" to Aldington's heartbreaking WWI story, "At All Costs." This collection contains the works of fine writers (Faulkner, Kipling, Forester, Crane, Kipling) and historical figures (Churchill,T.Roosevelt). As a parent, I am encouraging my adolescent son to read this book so that he will understand what others have done and what he may one day be called upon to do for his country. This book will one day be rediscovered and reprinted for a modern America once again engaged in a discussion of war and courage. In the meantime, join me in being grateful for these used copies which are available at (usually) reasonable prices.

Little know Hemingway

Only the introduction, by itself, is worth a thousand books. Hemingway at its best. Actual, honest and eye opening, seemed to me he was writing this just yesterday instead of 70 years ago.

A Rambunctious Romp Along the Tamiami Trail

Hilarious, noisy, colorful, ludicrous and 100% Florida. Hardesty’s characters and the imaginative mischief they make recall the work of Hiaasen and Barry. This is laugh-out-loud, bucket-of-Bud summer fun. If you don’t fall for the ginger-maned Feathered Virgin yourself… Well, go-ahead see if you don’t. I’ll wager that those who do are already reaching for the next chapter in Harry Seaburn’s felonious saga, just one rockin’ roadhouse down the Trail. Warning: This rogue’s sneaky contagious.

Thirteen is a wonderful anthology. Vivra Beene is great at spinning wonderful yarns. The stories are wonderfully suspenseful and full of twists you'd never expect. They range from the very dark to lighter reading. It's a book you can put down, but you won't want to.

A former clinical psychologist, author Suzanne Singleton's perception and depth of understanding of human nature, frailties and triumphs shines through in this collection of fictional stories.
Singleton's book begins with a novella, The Promise, and includes fourteen other stories, each describing a moment in time, or a 'slice' in someone's life, life-changing, exquisitely intimate, triumphant, always thought-provoking.
My favourite is 'Red', the story of Fern, a young woman who married a doctor 30 years older than her, a wealthy man - but now impotent and forgetful. Singleton's writing in this story is raw and starkly descriptive: "The crowning red hair almost top heavy on a slip of a figure and the slash of bright lipstick against her pale complexion, lured him."
In contrast, we meet Margaret in "Carried to the Grave", a gentle intelligent older woman who faces the opposing emotions of joy and uncertainty when she meets her adult son for the first time, who was adopted out at birth. The final twist in the story is incisive.
Highly recommended - I keep going back to it.

Fédor Dostoïevski est né à Moscou en 1821 et mort à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1881. À partir de cette époque, il voyage en Europe, devient un joueur obsessionnel (ce qui donnera lieu au roman Le Joueur), et se ruine. Sa rencontre avec Anna Snitkine, qu’il engage d’abord comme dactylo et qui devient rapidement sa femme, lui permet de vivre de son métier, il écrit alors ses romans les plus connus, jusqu’aux Frères Karamazov qu’il publie à 60 ans, peu de temps avant sa mort.

What Benton gives us is more than a short story, it's courage for those lost in the black void

I love this story. It is a short tale simply about an elevator in a black void, and yet, within this simple scenario Benton manages to share an extraordinary deep and powerful message that most authors couldn't express without exceeding 5 pages.

There are many traits that make this story just wonderful. One of these is Benton's snarky but admirable narration. Although it's clear from the beginning Benton has something important to tell to his readers, that doesn't stop him from being laidback and casual with his storytelling. Not only does this unique narration give readers some smiles and laughs, it also makes readers relate to the author and feel willing to listen to his story.

The story itself is pretty basic. Without giving too much away, it's a story about an old man inside an elevator that's floating in a black void. What happens in that elevator with the old man, well, you're just going to have to read it and find out. There's actually nothing too interesting about the story or the characters involved, and Benton points this out in the narrative, being snarky as always but also modest.

But then comes the message of the story. Once you get to the end, suddenly the entire set-up of the characters and scenario make sense and have purpose. Like any good story, there are many interpretations of what exactly the message and purpose of the story is, but whatever you believe the exact message to be, it still all comes down to finding the light in the darkness. What does the light mean to you? Heaven? The future? The true path in life? That's all up to you to decide. Even if your interpretation is different from what Benton had in mind, that's the power of storytelling: We each indulge in an author's story and make a part of it our own.

This is the kind of story you would tell in a campfire. Simple, short, but deep and meaningful. If you know someone who is lost in the black void, give them this story. There is always a glimmer of light in darkness, but only the courageous will be able to run towards it. What Benton gives us is more than a short story, it's courage for those lost in the black void. The courage to be able to run towards the light.

Cant wait for the next one. Im so excited and sad that there will be only one more book after this one. I really liked the dynamic between Tori and Rose. So excited for the finale to finally get some answers.

Ready for Book 5!

So, Part Four.... I don't even know what to say because I have so many questions! A lot goes in Part Four where we're left wondering about the suspense of Tori's life. How much more can she take? Will Rose be able to handle what's happening to her? I love the relationship that's taken root between Rose and Tori even as the horrors of their lives unfold. And Ambrose! The reader goes back and forth with this guy just as much as Tori wondering what his role is in the plot of the story and how much involvement he really has yet we trust him at the same time. Lots of emotions, lots of suspense, and lots of fun in this installment.

As I've stated before, this series is continually moving forward. The author does a great job making the plot move with the action and suspense leaving you hooked. The serials are relatively short, I read all four in one evening. And while part four ends in another cliffhanger, it's not as cliffie as the rest but I still can't wait for book five to see the conclusion. If you're looking for something short, suspenseful, and fast to read this is your series!

Couldn't put this down!

Well, damn!! These novella's are getting to the point now where I just need to keep reading! Real life be damned! The events that happen in this book are mind-boggling and I was quite surprised by the turn of events, which I never saw coming. Once again, I have a ton of questions going through my head, mainly what happened to Rose??? Another cliffhanger, but thankfully, I have the final book to start.

And Flynn, what to think? One minute I'm questioning his motives and the next I'm thinking no, he couldn't, could he just as Tori is. And I wondered more than once what he was going through given the situation in this book.

I still have no idea where this whole story is going to end up, which is exactly what makes this book so great! If you love suspense and mystery, with some hot romance thrown in, this is the series for you. I highly recommend!!

About the Author
Michael H. Dickman has been writing acrostic word puzzles for over a decade, and posting them on his website acrostica.com. Acrostica is his first series of acrostic puzzles in print. He has degrees in chemistry and law and his interests range from playing woodwinds to making ceramics, and include X-ray crystallography, computer programming, and sipping Darjeeling tea while writing acrostic puzzles.

Acrostica: some challenging puzzles

It has been really hard to find challenging acrostics, since the NY Times don't seem to be publishing any more. But Acrostica offers puzzles that stump me at times, and there are usually enough clues that I eventually, sometimes after several days of pondering, have to look up. I use the hardest clue first, something i would never, ever get if i lived to be 100. I also try to use the hardest way to find a clue, to make it more challenging. I.e. if it is a synonym, I will use a paper crossword dictionary, or if an obscure movie, I will use IMDB. As other acrostic aficionadoes know, sometimes it only takes one clue to get the ball rolling. Anyway, I'm thrilled to find puzzles that can stump me. For those reading this review, and wondering if this book will be good for them, here's the "level" I'm at: I can complete a lot of the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle, having to use a (paper) crossword dictionary for several clues. I'm planning on buying the rest of the series.

A Great New Volume of Acrostic Puzzles!

If you're a confirmed acrostaholic like I am, you'll love Michael's puzzles. I've been solving them on his website for several years now, and always find them to be fun and challenging.

I love solving online, but it's great to have a volume of "Acrostica" puzzles in book form, as well. Perfect for solving on leisurely Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee -- or three...

Good collection of acrostics puzzles

Acrostics puzzle books seem to be increasingly rare, and this is a good addition to what's available. The puzzles are of medium difficulty, easier than Cyn Morris's American Acrostics, but tougher than the Puzzle Baron or Ashley ones. Of course, nobody can match the clever (and tough!) acrostics by Cox and Rathvon, but this collection will appeal to acrostic addicts of all levels of skill.
