This early work by Richard Harding Davis was originally published in the early 20th century and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'A Charmed Life' is a short story about a young woman distressed at her husband for going to fight in a war. Davis attended Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins University, but was asked to leave both due to neglecting his studies in favour socialising. During the Second Boer War in South Africa, Davis was a leading correspondent of the conflict. He saw the war first-hand from both parties perspectives and documented it in his publication 'With Both Armies' (1900). He wrote widely from locations such as the Caribbean, Central America, and even from the perspective of the Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War. Davis died following a heart attack on 11th April, 1916, at the age of 51.

Not up to Mary McCarthy's usual standards

Some parts of this books are great. But other parts are hard to believe: pages and pages of incompetent-sounding people discussing philosophy via old playwrights, with untranslated paragraphs in French and Latin. And I cannot forgive the ending. The ending in The Group revived hope. This ending sounds like McCarthy just decided to drop the whole thing.

I love this book mostly because I can relate to it. We began reading part of it in class this morning and I just had to finish the book.. it's that good. I would highly recommend it.

A different kind of story

I received this book through Goodreads' First Reads program. The short stories contained within are very interesting. I was not a huge fan of how the stories flowed, they did not follow a traditional flow. I would call the story presentation "artsy."
I did really enjoy three of the stories; Good Teachings, Arahant, and A Brief Moment In Time. I think these were written in more of a traditional way.
Good Teachings was my favorite. It had sci-fi, mystery, and criminal elements that I really enjoyed.
As another reviewer stated, the book could take another pass by an editor. Some word and punctuation mistakes make some scenes hard to decipher. Also, a warning, some of the stories contain scenes of rape.
Overall, I'd say it was a decent first offering by an author with good ideas that just needs a good editor.

A good introduction to the classics

It's sometimes both awesome and awful to return to the classics and see where the roots of horror lie, and this anthology is no exception. Since we live in an age where we suffer from an overabundance of information, it is far easier for authors to gain an understanding of the trends within particular genres.

Having read this collection of short fiction, I can clearly judge how the genre has grown in depth and, also, has devolved. That which is it's boon in contemporary times is also its curse. Not all stories that are released onto today's market are ready for publication.

And, likewise, looking back at the stories in this volume, not all of the tales are paragons of literary greatness. That being said, I do believe it important for us to be able to look backward and see how far we have come. The short story, as a form, is so vital to fiction, since it creates a literary snapshot of a time and place. And especially so to those who're interested in a particular era.

So, Famous Modern Ghost Stories is a bit of a mixed bag. If I'm going to be objective, I'll state flat out that some of the authors come across like people I probably wouldn't want to hang out with in present times. There were, however, a number of stories that did stand out from the pack.

"The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood deserves its place in the classics section. What starts out as a travelogue in the spirit of high adventure, quickly decays into a tense and decidedly weird and frightening dilemma. The creeping horror is not so much the supernatural phenomena, but rather Blackwood's fantastic evocation of the environment. His world building is masterful, and I got sweaty palms at the parts where the characters were in a race against nature's inexorable flow. It's man versus environment, and the realisation that there is little to separate us from complete catastrophe.

"Lazarus" by Leonid Andreyev is unrelenting in its crushing misery. To be honest, I was startled by the choice in subject matter, of taking a biblical story and subverting it so. Therein lay the horror. Sometimes the dead should remain dead.

"Ligeia" by Edgar Allan Poe, of course, is a treat in all his wonderful wordiness, followed closely by another favourite (and highly underrated) Guy de Maupassant, whose "A Ghost" is suitably atmospheric.

The majority of the other stories didn't really grab me by my short and curlies. There were even a few where I sat back and asked, "What's the point?" We really have come far with the short story as a form.

So, my advice—this slim tome will interest those who would like to dip into vintage horror for the first time or who would like to lay hands on a particular story. I certainly enjoyed this collection and feel it's a keeper that has pointed me in the direction of further reading.

A Dog’s Tale, a short story written by Mark Twain. the story is told from the standpoint of a loyal household pet, a dog self described by the first sentence of the story; “My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I am a Presbyterian.” The story begins with a description of the dog’s life as a puppy and her separation from her mother. Soon, her own puppy and her owner’s new child were added to her new home. When a fire breaks out in the nursery, the dog risks her life to rescue and drag the baby to safety, but her motives are misunderstood and she is cruelly beaten. The truth of the situation is soon discovered and she receives no end of praise. Later, her puppy dies, and the dog pines inconsolable over the grave of the puppy with the clear implication that she will do so until death.

About the Author
Mark Twain (1835 –1910) was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He apprenticed with a printer. He also worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which proved to be very popular and brought him nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received. Twain had found his calling. He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. However, he lacked financial acumen. Though he made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he squandered it on various ventures, in particular the Paige Compositor, and was forced to declare bankruptcy. With the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, however, he eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain worked hard to ensure that all of his creditors were paid in full, even though his bankruptcy had relieved him of the legal responsibility. Born during a visit by Halley's Comet, he died on its return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

A great story about man's cruelty towards his dog

Other reviewers have rated this poorly, and I want to correct that. The story is not a happy one, as most stories with pets are. This tale of a dog, who tries to do as his mother would do, saves the life of his master's baby and is abused by the father who is a scientist. The dog has a puppy of his own, and the puppy is used as an experimental dog by the scientist and put to sleep and buried. The dog, knowing that when you bury seeds they grow into something beautiful, hopes and waits for his baby's growing since the puppy too was buried in the soil.

The tale itself is about the cruelty that man and science had towards dogs at the time, and it's not for the faint of heart. It's also a testament to Twain's writing that he can take the tale of inhumanity towards Man's best friend and spin it into a heartbreaking narrative.

One of the great ones. . .

Near the end of his life, Twain wrote stories that expressed his contempt for the cruelties, stupidities, and general brutishness of mankind. In this story, which goes well with The Mysterious Stranger, he contrasts man with dogs. Dogs have true morality and heroism, which doesn't stand a chance against man's "moral sense."

The reader who sees Twain as a children's author will be horrified at much of his work. Twain's humor is seldom meant to be jolly or forgiving. You can disagree with him (and hopefully survive the results of your naivite) but should not be surprised at what happens to the decent animals at the hands of humans.

Recommended as part of an excellent Twain collection Kindle is offering free (but stay away from the collections).

Can't get it out of my head

There are stories and then there are Dog Tales. Mark Twain writes early in the development of animal rights and he hits readers right between the eyes with his words through his character development. Spending a dollar on this moved more than a buck from my pocket book, it still rattles my soul as a positive dog trainer.

ridiculous and hilarious

This quick read is irreverent, funny, completely ridiculous, and completely vulgar... in other words, everything I love in my fiction. Also, it mercilessly lampoons PETA, so that's a win as well.

The Southern California Righteous Sorcerers of Joe are minding their own business and worshiping their gigantic purple kangaroo from outer space messiah (also in their spare time manufacturing a righteous anal lubricant) when these holier-than-thou PETA jerks start breaking in to their compound to try to rescue Joe the purple kangaroo from his "tormentors." Joe fights them off, but they are unwilling to give up their holy mission. There is a kangaroo kidnapping and the Righteous Sorcerers are jailed, but Joe isn't ready to give up yet. He has another surprise up his sleeve (spoiler alert: it's his BAFRL!)

This is a very funny short work written under the pseudonym of Rick Peppers by a really great author of horror/sf/speculative fiction.

Looks like the first book in a possible NEW SERIES offered by the 50 Things To Know series people.

This book appears to be a great start of a possible new series. I read all of the questions presented and quickly processed them for myself. I definitely plan to go through each one again with in-depth study.

The author and team of writers are apparently not strangers to publishing e-books. I have read many of them on my kindle. I REALLY hoped for precise quality proofreading to be in place by now; however, that is unfortunately not the case. There are quite a few typos throughout that actually distracted the flow of my reading. SOME even caused a few of the questions to be difficult to understand.

I enjoyed the book. I am compelled to deduct 1 Star for typos and related confusion. Recommended with a 4 Star Rating in its current state. Hopefully, the author will find a way to solve the recurring typographical error problem in this book as well as the other published works.

In these vignettes of expatriate life, the vividness of the writing not only captivated me but also immersed me into George's world. I enjoyed the book very much being able to see the situation and feel camaraderie with the characters. With shades of Dave Barry and Erma Bombeck, I would recommend this book to anyone who dreams of "tooling around" in Mexico or other out of the way place.

Great Super Size Puzzles - Insomniacs Rejoice!

Very challenging! These Extra Large logic puzzles range in size from 60 x 15 pixels to a huge 100 x 75! The giant puzzles had to be reduced to a small size to fit on the 8 1/2 x 11" pages, so you'll want to have some fine-tipped pencils or pens available, and a book-marker or other straightedge to help keep your place. There are 95 puzzles so this could take a while to go through. As with all images, the more pixels, the greater the detail of the picture, so if you've got the patience to do them, you won't be disappointed. The one thing that I really wish Griddlers would do is to make their books spiral-bound for greater ease of puzzle solving.
