Ashen Eyes See A Future

Gather around, kids, as yet another horrifying story from the mind of Alan Spencer is upon us. This time, it's about what happens when the cremated ashes attack, specifically by entering the eyes and take over a body. That's what you get with his third novel Ashes in Her Eyes.

The novel begins when crematorium worker Stephanie Garris accidentally gets ashes of a killer into her eyes after they spill out of an urn she was carrying to a different place. It is after that where there are three different stories intertwined into one: Becky Lowen and her friends worrying about Stephanie/Michael Demner killing her, Stephanie's husband Ryan worrying about Stephanie's sudden change in habits such as smoking and drinking, and Michael's attempt to escape the cremated world by taking over Stephanie's body and mind. The take over is gradual, which lends itself as far as developing the story and suspense factor. Along the way, there are also some gruesome murders, which are told in a fair amount of detail, as well as the fraying emotions of both Becky and Ryan. The end of the book is not lacking in excitement, as the frantic moments add to an already intense read.

Ashes in Her Eyes has an interesting plot that is carried out quite well, despite the silliness of the premise of ashes taking over someone's body. Then again, logic has to be thrown out the window for horror books. The characters are fairly well developed, though when Becky's boyfriend got smashed into pieces, I wasn't shedding any tears for the guy. And the novel has one of the best one liners after he bites the dust: "GD, Becky, your boyfriend stinks. I think he s*** himself on impact."

Slightly Disturbing, like how horror should be

What I really enjoyed about Spencer's book is the amount of time spent in really grabbing the torment of Stephanie's infliction. The agonizing migraines, the digging sensation in her brain, the rattling of her skull were lavished with detail. And while her tormenting headaches are clearly vivid, they are nowhere as disturbing as the sickening condition of her eyes. I really get the sensation that Spencer really enjoyed those particular scenes, and fortunately they are frequent throughout the book.

In addition to the extreme attention to her condition, I found the sense of entrapment captivating. Cursed from the accident to serve as a blind host for a troubled, disturbed spirit bent on killing the one responsible for his death, Stephanie wanders through the shocking aftermath completely oblivious. The sides within engage in a personal blood-feud that tears through her body like an all out battlefield, and her fight with this invasive intruder knows no bounds. In each sober wake, a wave of confusion greets her, unmasking slowly to reveal destruction that her own hand had dealt, but without a clear consciousness that can own up to it.

I got what in my eye!

Alan Spencer is great! What a creative twist to the Zombie world! The book is one you cannot put down it moves quickly and lots of unexpected twist. You won't believe the ending. It would make a great movie - Hollywood wake up and stop making remakes - this is new and not what you would expect! Classic horror in the making.

Creative Deeds Reads Review

This is a group of short stories that represent the seasons. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Nature’s Fifth Season. Trust me, it’ll make sense when you read it. Each one has some form of paranormal aspect. Some of the stories are funny and cute. They all have at least one interesting twist. Some are down right creepy and I dare you to read the last story and not shed a tear. This is the perfect book to pick up when you’re in between reads or just want to read through one of them when you have a little bit of spare time.

Eleanor

The description of Eleanor above pretty much says it all. The tables are turned on a pair of teenagers when they decide to take on Eleanor. She may look like a defenseless little old cat lady, but appearances can fool you. I almost felt sorry for them at the end… almost. ;)

The Goblin

How many kids are afraid of the monster who lives under their bed or in their closet? Jeremy had some pretty steadfast rules when it came to monsters and he tried not to break them. I’m glad I read this one when my days of checking under the bed and in the closet for my kids were long over. *shivers*

Crossroads

Honesty is the best policy, especially when it comes to marriage. This couple learned an important lesson about honesty and some interesting consequences of keeping secrets.

Dear Maddy

I can honestly say that I didn’t see the twist in Dear Maddy coming. The story was a series of letters written to the ghost of a man left behind after her death. That’s pretty much all I can say without giving anything away.

Touch

Oh Colt… such a good dog. This story was unique in a lot of ways, but mainly because it was told totally from the dog’s perspective. It began with Colt at the Pound on the day that he found his new Forever Home with Becca and her family. Touch covers the life-span of Colt… and beyond. I have to be honest, I knew what I was in for when I started reading Touch, but I still wasn’t prepared. If you are a dog lover, be forewarned. This story will bring back every memory you’ve tucked away if you’ve ever loved and lost a dog. Even if you’re not a dog lover, I dare you (again) not to feel something when you read this story. There is no doubt in my mind that dogs sense more than we can imagine. Michelle Muto reinforces that in Touch and gives them a ‘voice’ that I totally believe they internally have. *sigh*

On Par with Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents!

This is my third book by author Michelle Muto. Just when you think you've gotten used to an author's style, they change up on you in the most pleasant of ways. "Nature's Fifth Season" was a book that made me feel like I was a teenager again reading Stephen King's "Night Shift." It has all the elements of nice chills, and disturbing turns. It was nice to see her tackle the anthology format. I hope she writes more of them.
I won't do any spoilers. Each story stands perfectly on it's own, two in particular grabbed me. One on a very visceral level, and the other emotionally.
It's very visual in style and makes a great afternoon read, or if you'd like some creepy just before bedtime literature

Short story Heaven the Muto way.

I am not ordinarily a reader of short stories but this is a book you must read. As I read each story I came away with the feeling I was watching "Twilight Zone". Each story was a fantastic read in which I thought I knew where each story was going but was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong. It was all topped off with a love story that only Michelle could write. No spoilers here because you all need to experience it on your own. You won't be sorry. If you are already a fan of Michelle or have not yet experienced her writing this is a great quick starting point for you.

Sonja N. Kreps is a wife, mother of two, and elementary school teacher. She is a proud life-long resident of Northeast Ohio and loves experiencing all four seasons each year. Fluent in English, movie quotes, sarcasm, she is also trying to bring back the use of the Oxford comma by instilling its importance in her students' minds. A grammatical army, muahahaha!
When Sonja Kreps is not writing, she enjoys reading, playing volleyball and coaching gymnastics, which is now terrifying to her after being away from the sport to have her own babies. 

Future plans for writing include the sequel to her first published book, The Tale of Miss Susie and her Steamboat: And Other Songs from your Childhood Explained, a book for each of her children, and a book series that her students can read and enjoy.

I loved the details that bring this book to life

I could not put this book down!! It took me back to my childhood, with all the songs and chants I used to sing with my friends. Except now, with an adult twist on the origins, I cant stop singing them and thinking about this book!! Such a well thought out plot, that even days later, I am still making the connections throughout the book. I loved the details that bring this book to life! The whirl wind romance with Susie, Miss Susie, and her dreamboat kept me on the excited edge. I hope you choose to enjoy this book too!

Blast from the past!

The minute you begin to read you are transported back to the playground. Singing the songs you loved because they were catchy and sometimes even a little risque. The Tale of Miss Susie is given a more adult explanation, in Sonja Kreps debut novel that will have you quickly turning pages to the end. The dry humor is laugh out loud funny with characters that are easily relatable. For a quick read that will leave you on the edge of your seat and wanting more, check out The Tale of Miss Susie and her Steamboat!

Great little book!! An intriguing and quick read - the perfect pick for my lazy Sunday afternoon. It's a tale any girl can relate to and a reality so many fear; written so well I couldn't help but finish!

The story was captivating, but the details were most impressive!! The author nailed it, beginning with the cover.I thought it felt peculiar... ;)

An Entirely Different Side of Oscar Wilde

This collection - one of thousands of worthwhile 'freebies' available for Kindle - offers a side of Oscar Wilde unknown to those who've only experienced his witty, cynical plays. These 'fairy tales' are gentle, moralistic, and only sometimes sardonic. I downloaded it in order to have my favorite of Wilde's short stories, "The Selfish Giant", which blends children's fantasy with Christian iconography in a charming, emotionally affecting way. Now I've read them all and I'm glad I have the set. This also led me to download another freebie, "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime", also recommended.

Excellent beyond compare!!!!

As a child I didn't have the books of Oscar Wilde but rather the records. My imagination soared with his descriptions of life, and my eyes overflowed with tears at each story. The record of the Happy Prince was read by Bing Crosby and Orson Wells and each year at Christmas we still play that old scratched thing, just to hear it's wonderous love story and that of The Selfish Giant. Now I have to get the book so my nieces and nephews will share in my treasures of love!!!! What is this world if it isn't all about Love?

Nine lovely, tragic tales

I am no expert on Oscar Wilde, but I've been reading fairytales long enough to be able to tell the difference between an enchanting story and a bunch of pap. The nine magically airy yarns in this small collection are definitely in the first category.

"The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant" are perhaps the most famous of the nine. In the first story, the golden statue of a prince weeps for all the suffering people he sees and begs a swallow to strip him of his riches and distribute them to the masses. In the second tale, a giant builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep out the noisy children, only to find out that he has also locked out the Spring.
"The Young King" is a variation on the theme of "A Happy Prince". When a young monarch learns of the suffering and misery caused by his requirement for a robe, a crown, and a sceptre, he refuses to handle any of these riches and is given a more fitting raiment by a Divine Power. Keeping with the royal theme is "The Star-Child", about a beautiful but horrible young boy whose physical appearance grows to match his ugly spirit. Another little bird appears in "The Nightingale and the Rose", to help a young man win the heart of the woman he loves.
The stories' themes include beauty, tragedy, agony, compassion, innocence, and (Platonic) love. Some characters give their lives, or sell their souls, in the name of love. There are also the same archetypes that appear in dreams: the Divine Child, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man or Woman, the Number 3, and more. Add all this to Wilde's delicate writing and gilded imagination, and you get some of the most original tales ever written.
Though most of these stories end happily, all end tragically. That is to say, even when the endings are happy, someone always dies. Each story manages to associate everything thrilling and exquisite about beauty with the starkness of death. Accordingly, not all of these tales are suitable for children. For example, one scene in "The Fisherman and His Soul" features witches dancing before the devil and the princess in "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a heartless child whose mockery leads to the death of a little dwarf. Though the stories are moral at the core, and often explicitly Christian, they do not always make sense.
Despite the faults, the keening, poignant loveliness shines through, making me want to read each story again and again and again.
