Fédor Dostoïevski est né à Moscou en 1821 et mort à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1881. Lorsqu’il retrouve la liberté, Dostoïevski est d’abord officier en Sibérie, puis il prend sa retraite en 1860. À partir de cette époque, il voyage en Europe, devient un joueur obsessionnel (ce qui donnera lieu au roman Le Joueur), et se ruine. Sa rencontre avec Anna Snitkine, qu’il engage d’abord comme dactylo et qui devient rapidement sa femme, lui permet de vivre de son métier, il écrit alors ses romans les plus connus, jusqu’aux Frères Karamazov qu’il publie à 60 ans, peu de temps avant sa mort.

What Benton gives us is more than a short story, it's courage for those lost in the black void

I love this story. It is a short tale simply about an elevator in a black void, and yet, within this simple scenario Benton manages to share an extraordinary deep and powerful message that most authors couldn't express without exceeding 5 pages.

There are many traits that make this story just wonderful. One of these is Benton's snarky but admirable narration. Although it's clear from the beginning Benton has something important to tell to his readers, that doesn't stop him from being laidback and casual with his storytelling. Not only does this unique narration give readers some smiles and laughs, it also makes readers relate to the author and feel willing to listen to his story.

The story itself is pretty basic. Without giving too much away, it's a story about an old man inside an elevator that's floating in a black void. What happens in that elevator with the old man, well, you're just going to have to read it and find out. There's actually nothing too interesting about the story or the characters involved, and Benton points this out in the narrative, being snarky as always but also modest.

But then comes the message of the story. Once you get to the end, suddenly the entire set-up of the characters and scenario make sense and have purpose. Like any good story, there are many interpretations of what exactly the message and purpose of the story is, but whatever you believe the exact message to be, it still all comes down to finding the light in the darkness. What does the light mean to you? Heaven? The future? The true path in life? That's all up to you to decide. Even if your interpretation is different from what Benton had in mind, that's the power of storytelling: We each indulge in an author's story and make a part of it our own.

This is the kind of story you would tell in a campfire. Simple, short, but deep and meaningful. If you know someone who is lost in the black void, give them this story. There is always a glimmer of light in darkness, but only the courageous will be able to run towards it. What Benton gives us is more than a short story, it's courage for those lost in the black void. The courage to be able to run towards the light.

Cant wait for the next one. Im so excited and sad that there will be only one more book after this one. I really liked the dynamic between Tori and Rose. So excited for the finale to finally get some answers.

Ready for Book 5!

So, Part Four.... I don't even know what to say because I have so many questions! A lot goes in Part Four where we're left wondering about the suspense of Tori's life. How much more can she take? Will Rose be able to handle what's happening to her? I love the relationship that's taken root between Rose and Tori even as the horrors of their lives unfold. And Ambrose! The reader goes back and forth with this guy just as much as Tori wondering what his role is in the plot of the story and how much involvement he really has yet we trust him at the same time. Lots of emotions, lots of suspense, and lots of fun in this installment.

As I've stated before, this series is continually moving forward. The author does a great job making the plot move with the action and suspense leaving you hooked. The serials are relatively short, I read all four in one evening. And while part four ends in another cliffhanger, it's not as cliffie as the rest but I still can't wait for book five to see the conclusion. If you're looking for something short, suspenseful, and fast to read this is your series!

Couldn't put this down!

Well, damn!! These novella's are getting to the point now where I just need to keep reading! Real life be damned! The events that happen in this book are mind-boggling and I was quite surprised by the turn of events, which I never saw coming. Once again, I have a ton of questions going through my head, mainly what happened to Rose??? Another cliffhanger, but thankfully, I have the final book to start.

And Flynn, what to think? One minute I'm questioning his motives and the next I'm thinking no, he couldn't, could he just as Tori is. And I wondered more than once what he was going through given the situation in this book.

I still have no idea where this whole story is going to end up, which is exactly what makes this book so great! If you love suspense and mystery, with some hot romance thrown in, this is the series for you. I highly recommend!!

Michael H. Dickman has been writing acrostic word puzzles for over a decade, and posting them on his website acrostica.com. Acrostica is his first series of acrostic puzzles in print. He has degrees in chemistry and law and his interests range from playing woodwinds to making ceramics, and include X-ray crystallography, computer programming, and sipping Darjeeling tea while writing acrostic puzzles.

Acrostica: some challenging puzzles

It has been really hard to find challenging acrostics, since the NY Times don't seem to be publishing any more. But Acrostica offers puzzles that stump me at times, and there are usually enough clues that I eventually, sometimes after several days of pondering, have to look up. I use the hardest clue first, something i would never, ever get if i lived to be 100. I also try to use the hardest way to find a clue, to make it more challenging. I.e. if it is a synonym, I will use a paper crossword dictionary, or if an obscure movie, I will use IMDB. As other acrostic aficionadoes know, sometimes it only takes one clue to get the ball rolling. Anyway, I'm thrilled to find puzzles that can stump me. For those reading this review, and wondering if this book will be good for them, here's the "level" I'm at: I can complete a lot of the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle, having to use a (paper) crossword dictionary for several clues. I'm planning on buying the rest of the series.

If you're a confirmed acrostaholic like I am, you'll love Michael's puzzles. I've been solving them on his website for several years now, and always find them to be fun and challenging.

I love solving online, but it's great to have a volume of "Acrostica" puzzles in book form, as well. Perfect for solving on leisurely Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee -- or three...

Good collection of acrostics puzzles

Acrostics puzzle books seem to be increasingly rare, and this is a good addition to what's available. The puzzles are of medium difficulty, easier than Cyn Morris's American Acrostics, but tougher than the Puzzle Baron or Ashley ones. Of course, nobody can match the clever (and tough!) acrostics by Cox and Rathvon, but this collection will appeal to acrostic addicts of all levels of skill.
