THE greatest chess book ever written

I have been a Master (over 2200) for 30 years, and a collector of chess books for more years than that (I have about 1800 chess books). All of Dvoretsky's books are tough reads as they are intended for a more advanced audience, but they are absolutely awesome.

Simply put, in terms of instruction and value to your game, this is THE greatest chess book ever written. Study this book thoroughly, and you will have more endgame knowledge than most ordinary masters, and many IMs too. This book will serve you better than any opening manual ever will, and for a lifetime of chess.

Awesome book. This book is for the serious chess player who is willing to learn, this is not a regular coffee table book. Mark Dvoretsky is a master and needs no introduction. The Guru is praised by many famous authors and that's enough introduction. Great examples, clear explanation, he has picked up ideas that are important and might arise in actual games. That differentiates the book from thousand of other endgame books.

Not boring, but still a bit dry.

Aspiring NM, I think the book is dense and well done. Endgame is my favorite phase to play, but least favorite to study. Dvoretsky is more successful in this book at capturing my interest than any other endgame book so far.

Religion, Sex and Satire

Satire and comic novels aren't big with American readers, but if you like laughs with your heavy thematic content, this very funny book delivers. The question is whether the protagonist, George -- a professional creep who has had an apparent religious awakening -- is faking, nuts, or the genuine article. His drunk, unfaithful wife is determined to find out, and enlists an attractive young priest unlucky enough to be having a crisis of faith. The ironies abound. Corporate greed and intrigue, Lake Champlain's own Loch Ness Monster, a phalanx of Catholic priests (all named for alcoholic actors), and a fair amount of erotica and food porn propel a narrative that ends cinematically in the wilds of Vermont. The dialogue is first-rate, the prose workmanlike and witty (more Burgess here than Waugh), but the themes of materialism and spirituality are dealt with on a serious level, with a good deal of Thomas Merton-style ruminating. The author seems genuinely concerned about his sober message, but there are plenty of laugh-out-loud, page-turning chapters. It was a fast, enjoyable read, but it did leave me thinking about its obvious agenda. It would make a good movie.

Laughter and seriousness abound

Great read! There lots of laughs in this book with an undercurrent of seriousness. The story is about a cheating husband who is a changed man after a car accident. He wants to become a priest. His wife is shocked. The rest of the story is an account of the struggle of both husband and wife to find a solution. Lots of laughable scenes. Well written and fun. Moral in this story and plot is resolved.

I loved the humor in this novel (and it's a real art to write this type of humor), the seriousness of the themes present, and most of all, the characters. Father O'Toole is such an interesting, original character that I found myself smiling every time he walked on scene. Excellent read.

Marbot was a Chasseur, so again we obtain the Cavalry point of view. Among other books which help one to an understanding of the Napoleonic soldier I would specially recommend "Les Cahiers du Capitaine Coignet," which treat the wars from the point of view of the private of the Guards, and "Les Memoires du Sergeant Bourgoyne," who was a non-commissioned officer in the same corps. The Journal of Sergeant Fricasse and the Recollections of de Fezenac and of de Segur complete the materials from which I have worked in my endeavour to give a true historical and military atmosphere to an imaginary figure. I would not dare to tell you how many I have entered as a conqueror with eight hundred of my little fighting devils clanking and jingling behind me. The cavalry were in front of the Grande Armee, and the Hussars of Conflans were in front of the cavalry, and I was in front of the Hussars. But of all the cities which we visited Venice is the most ill-built and ridiculous. I can-not imagine how the people who laid it out thought that the cavalry could manoeuvre. It would puzzle Murat or Lassalle to bring a squad-ron into that square of theirs. For this reason we left Kellermann's heavy brigade and also my own Hussars at Padua on the mainland. But Suchet with the infantry held the town, and he had chosen me as his aide-de-camp for that winter, because he was pleased about the affair of the Italian fencing-master at Milan. Besides, he deserved a lesson, for if one does not like a prima donna's singing one can always be silent, but it is intolerable that a public affront should be put upon a pretty woman. So the sympathy was all with me, and after the affair had blown over and the man's widow had been pensioned Suchet chose me as his own galloper, and I followed him to Venice, where I had the strange adventure which I am about to tell you. You have not been to Venice? No, for it is seldom that the French travel. We were great travellers in those days. From Moscow to Cairo we had travelled everywhere, but we went in larger parties than were convenient to those whom we visited, and we carried our passports in our limbers. It will be a bad day for Europe when the French start trav-elling again, for they are slow to leave their homes, but when they have done so no one can say how far they will go if they have a guide like our little man to point out the way. But the great days are gone and the great men are dead, and here am I, the last of them, drinking wine of Suresnes and telling old tales in a cafe. But it is of Venice that I would speak."

The book every comic and/or videogames fan absolutely needs now that it exists

If you didn't spend your childhood reading comics and playing comic-based video games, this niche-appeal book will likely make about as much sense to you as a Swahili cookbook. However, if you DID spend your childhood reading comics and battling evil on your TV screen, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Meticulously accurate, WRONG! is filled with love for both comics and games, but pulls no punches about just how ridiculously off-source most of those games were. It's also well-researched and exhaustive. If the game existed, there's a very strong chance it's in here (even if it never made it past the prototype stage). It's a great trip down memory lane, complete with scads of screenshots, and you may even find yourself yelling "Finally! That's what I've been saying since 1991!" at some of the entries. For those of us with years of suppressed nerd-rage, this is utter catharsis. If you're less raging, it's still funny.

One final note: the author's tone is spot-on. Snarky, but never cruel, he leans more toward the "Come on dev guys, what were you thinking?" side of humor than the more hateful and vindictive, "you should all die in a fire for this disrespect" kind of tone. It's a nice approach, and makes the book imminently readable.

To sum up: Like comics? Buy this book. Like video games, especially old ones about comics? Buy this book.

Fun read about some forgotten games

Really enjoyable read that brought back quite a few memories for me in the form of some forgotten C64 and PC "classics" such as G.I. Joe and Spider-Man and Captain America in Doom's Revenge. I can't wait to see what comes next from the author.

I did find one hilarious typo, there is a section where he discusses the portrayal of Juggernaut in games and mentions the "Gym" of Cyttorak. I like to think that instead of magic, he just had to work out really hard to become unstoppable under the tutelage of this Cyttorak fellow.

Filled to the brim with nostalgia

This provides a quick, fun read that's great if you're feeling nostalgic for the comic book games of old. It does however feel like an overblown internet or magazine article and never really moves past that. Well worth reading, but not quite as good as it could have been. I'm definitely in for more books Mr. Baker though, and would love to see him deliver on his promise of that movie game adaptions. Bonus points for including Kool-Aid man and the Noid.

A Captivating, Action-Packed Novella

"The League of Protectors: Fire and Ice" is an action-packed novella set in the future where a League of Post Human Protectors strive to bring local criminals to justice. This short story follows the exploits of Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott friends and partners, polar opposites in abilities and temperament who fight to control any threat from subversive Post Humans.

Although the story is slow at first with minimal background information which I expect is contained in the first novel, the story quickly heats up when K.I.L.L. unleashes its plan to control Post Humans and dominate the world. With clever dexterity Christian Green uses sarcasm and humor to dilute the intensity built-up with every clash of these superheroes. The story is entertaining and imaginative; a page-turner from beginning to the end. And when you think the two fearless superheroes have saved the day, the ending is filled with more questions that beg for a sequel.

The characters are complex, realistic and fascinating; the friendship between Shayne and Jackson strong and binding for two individuals so different in personality. Shayne Tucker the African-American with powers of speed, pyrokinesis(fire) and self-healing is reserved, studious and idealistic. A strategist, he tends to be a shrewd and a clever leader while Jackson is thoughtless at times, a realist and has a flare for the dramatic. With the power of cyrokinesis (ice) he tends to be impulsive and very social, loving the limelight. Of the two Jackson is the charming womanizer while Shayne is a romantic, but their friendship and loyalty is considered legendary.

Although you only glimpse the cruelty, menace and deceptiveness of Greg Dansbury and Dorian Graner, these agents of K.I.L.L. are formidable villains who I expect will dominate the pages of Christian Green's next novel adding power and drama to the story.

I enjoyed "The League of Protectors: Fire and Ice" and look forward to reading his next novel. Reminiscent of Michael Carroll's writing style Christian Green is a writer to watched in future.

A different kind of superhero story - enjoy Fire and Ice!

Fire and Ice focuses on superheroes Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott. They are so-called Post Humans - i.e. humans with special (superhero) abilities. One of them produces fire, the other's weapon is ice. They are not to harm the criminals, justice is handled by other parties.

With Fire and Ice, Christian Green has created a fun and fresh superhero story. Fire and Ice gives you an insight into the life and friendship of two relatively different students; an introvert and an extrovert womaniser. The combination of Shayne and Jackson's everyday life and their special tasks kept me hooked. Christian Green balances the male students' habits and needs as well as their crime-fighting superhero abilities well. It is a fast-paced and enjoyable read. I felt like an invisible (sometimes chuckling) observer. Fire and Ice is a good read for young adult superhero fans, who prefer a slightly humorous touch.

This is a pleasant read - I would like to read more about The League of Protectors.

The League of Protectors: Ice and Fire is an engaging story about two opposite characters. Shayne and Jackson. While one fares well in the pursuit of studies, the other delves into womanizing for pastime pleasure, Both being partners in crime, as members of this league, they are trained militants up against enemies with special abilities of making bodily fire and ice - similar to the movie Fantastic Four. Best of friends, they look out for each other as in war, also in peace through many adventures. Although, the constant reference to Post Humans as opposed to ordinarily humans was not clear to me, but understandably it has to do with criminals and the war that these protectors are trying to save the world from. It is an interesting read about the criminal world where bullets rule and dodging one makes the protectors die another day.
